| Bryan_Carey's Full Review: KFC |
KFC is the world's largest chicken restaurant chain, with more than 10,000 locations worldwide. Colonel Harland Sanders started KFC in the 1940's. His special blend of herbs and spices became known as the Colonel's "Original Recipe" and its popularity grew rapidly.
Colonel Sanders is the man responsible for popularizing the concept of franchising in fast- food. He didn't have the capital to just start building restaurants, so he decided to let other restaurants sell his secret recipe, for an agreed- upon fee. Thus, the franchising era in fast- food began.
KFC has several food items to choose from, but aside from a few vegetable items, everything else is chicken. KFC offers Original Recipe, Extra Crispy, and Hot & Spicy chicken; crispy strips, hot wings, honey barbecue wings, popcorn chicken, and chicken pot pie; six chicken sandwiches; and mashed potatoes, gravy, macaroni and cheese, potato wedges, baked beans, corn on the cob, and a few other things.
The nutritional value of KFC foods is decent, but many items contain more fat than you might expect. Comparing a drumstick from each of the three styles of chicken shows slight differences among them. One Original Recipe drumstick has 140 calories and 9 grams of fat; Hot & Spicy has 175 calories and 10 grams of fat; and Extra Crispy has 195 calories and 12 grams of fat. Among the six chicken sandwiches that KFC sells, only the Honey BBQ is low in calories and fat. It has 310 calories and 6 grams of fat. The other sandwiches range from 350 to 550 calories and from 15 to 32 grams of fat. The Triple Crunch Zinger is at the high end of these ranges. You can substantially cut the fat levels in these sandwiches if you exclude the sauce. For instance, the Triple Crunch Zinger (550 calories and 32 grams of fat) is reduced to only 390 calories and 15 grams of fat if the sauce is eliminated.
KFC products are ok overall. I do like the Extra Crispy chicken and the sandwiches are decent. But they don't offer any food item that is good enough to make me want it every day. I don't have KFC "cravings" like I do with other fast- food restaurants. Also, the flavor doesn't seem as good as it once was. I don't know if this is because the quality has really declined, or if it's because there is more competition now and better choices.
KFC is not very kid- friendly either. They don't have a kids menu or a child play area. The atmosphere is boring and forgettable. It's basically just a place to sit and eat. Cleanliness is good and service is efficient. Some locations have improved service by offering home delivery and internet ordering.
KFC is owned by Tricon Global Restaurants, Inc., the same people who own Taco Bell and Pizza Hut. KFC used to be known by its full name, Kentucky Fried Chicken. The name was shortened to KFC, most likely to eliminate the word "fried" from the name, which still has negative connotations to most people.
Colonel Harland Sanders' desire to produce and sell better- tasting chicken has grown into a worldwide success. Even though the Sanders family is out of the picture now, the Colonel's face is still used to promote the products. The food has lost some of its appeal over the years, but KFC is still good enough to justify an occasional visit.
