Pros: Pillowy, sweet goodness.
Cons: They are pretty bad for you.
The Bottom Line: The hot doughnuts are unbeatable. Don't let anyone at Dunkin Donuts tell you differently.

| Mom2TyZick's Full Review: Krispy Kreme |
Krispy Kreme is a North Carolina institution. The company opened its doors in July of 1937 when Vernon Rudolf bought the secret recipe from a French chef and has had a cult following ever since. When they first split up into chains, each chain got the recipe and made their own doughnuts from scratch. Mr. Rudolf didn’t like the inconsistency he found and developed his own dry mix to ship to each store and eventually developed his own doughnut making machinery for the ultimate in perfection. At our location in Hickory, NC you can even watch them make your doughnuts through the glass. This serves a double purpose for me: keeps the kids entertained while waiting in the line, and keeps the line cooks honest! No funny business in a glass-walled kitchen! Here in North Carolina you can find these treats in grocery stores, Wal-Marts and various gas stations, but do yourself a favor a go to a Krispy Kreme restaurant. The experience is not to be missed and the freshness is unparalleled.
The most popular doughnut is the simple glazed doughnut. If you truly have one fresh out of the fryer, you will know perfection. It is not the same to take a box home and re-heat it in the microwave. You must get them when the sign says “Hot Now.” It will be hard to settle for a cool one after you taste it. Folks converge on the stores when they have on the famous “Hot Now!” sign. They are warm little pillows of sweet, yeasty yet light dough, dunked in a sugary glaze that hardens to a thin coating over each doughnut. People make bread pudding out of stale doughnuts and even make cakes out of the little gems. They are that delicious.
Other varieties: Cinnamon Glazed: This is the glazed doughnut made with cinnamon infused dough with a topping of cinnamon powdered sugar. Cinnamon Twist: Yeast dough, infused with cinnamon and twisted then covered with cinnamon sugar. Cinnamon Bun: Cinnamon infused dough with a doughnut hole filling the middle to fill the space to resemble a bun. Covered with glaze. Cinnamon Apple Filled: This is the glazed doughnut made with cinnamon infused dough with a topping of cinnamon powdered sugar and filled with apple filling. Just like Mom’s apple pie! Apple Fritter: Dense dough with apple chunks throughout, dipped in glaze. Chocolate Iced Glazed: The glazed doughnut with a hard chocolate icing on top. Chocolate Iced with Sprinkles: Same as above, but with sprinkles. They usually coordinate colors with nearest holiday. Maple Iced Glazed: The glazed doughnut dipped in hard maple icing. Chocolate Iced Cream Filled: The glazed doughnut shell filled with Kreme and dipped in chocolate icing. Chocolate Iced Custard Filled: Same as above, but filled with custard. Dulce de Leche: a yeast shell filled with Caramel flavored cream and rolled in sugar. Glazed Raspberry Filled: Original Glazed doughnut shell filled with raspberry filling. Glazed Lemon Filled: Same as above, but with lemon filling. Glazed Kreme Filled: Same as above, but with Kreme filling. Traditional Cake: A cake doughnut. Powdered Cake: Same as above, but rolled in powdered sugar. Glazed Chocolate Cake: Chocolate cake doughnut, dipped in glaze. Glazed Blueberry Cake: Cake doughnut with blueberries in the batter, dipped in glaze. Glazed Sour Cream: Cake dough flavored with sour cream makes it dense and moist. Coated with glaze. Chocolate Iced Cake: Same as above, dipped in chocolate icing. Glazed Cruller: A cake doughnut in the cruller shape, dipped in glaze. Chocolate Iced Glazed Cruller: Same as the above, but dipped in chocolate icing. Powdered Strawberry Filled: A yeast doughnut shell filled with strawberry jam and sprinkled with powdered sugar. Sugar: Yeast doughnut sprinkled with sugar instead of glaze. New York Cheesecake: A yeast dough filled with cheesecake filling, topped with cream cheese icing and dusted with graham cracker crumbs. Caramel Kreme Crunch: A yeast doughnut filled with caramel cream, topped with chocolate icing and dusted with toffee crumbs. Doughnut Holes: Cake, Glazed, Glazed Blueberry Cake and Glazed Chocolate Cake.
What goes better with doughnuts than coffee? Krispy Kreme offers four distinctive varieties: Bold, Rich, Smooth and Robust Decaf. They are all available freshly brewed or ground for you to enjoy at home.
More up my alley are the espresso drinks. The Kaffe Kreme is a tall glass of steamed milk graced with Original Kreme and a healthy dose of espresso. The Mocha drink features steamed milk mixed with chocolate syrup and espresso and topped with whipped cream. The cappuccino is a little stronger with steamed milk and espresso and topped with an airy milk froth. The latte is milder but still full of the strong coffee flavor. It has steamed milk, flavored syrup and a shot of espresso. I’ve never had any of these drinks as I prefer milk with my doughnuts!
More up my alley are the Chillers that Krispy Kreme offers. My favorites are the Kremey varieties: Berries and Kreme, Oranges and Kreme, Lemon Sherbet, Chocolate Chocolate, Mocha Dream and Lotta Latte. I’ve tried the Chocolate Chocolate and it is fabulous, but I don’t see how you could eat it with a doughnut due to sugar overload! Also available are Fruity Chillers which are more like slushies. The two flavors are Orange You Glad and Very Berry.
As I mentioned, Krispy Kreme has somewhat of a cult following here in North Carolina. If you feel the same way, the online store offers Krispy Kreme sweatshirts, shirts, hats, boxers, coffee mugs and toy cars. You can even get re-loadable gift cards to send to friends all over the country!
If you are in need of fundraising opportunities, my children’s school has sold Krispy Kreme doughnuts in the morning before school and they constantly sell out. Ours sell for $5.00 per box of a dozen. For more information on fundraising: http://www.krispykreme.com/fund.html

I leave you with a quote from Steven Page of the Barenaked Ladies "I love Krispy Kreme donuts, but doesn't the thought of cream that's crispy just churn your stomach?"
