The Past...
I was first introduced to the pleasure of a Krispy Kreme donut when I was about 9 months pregnant and one opened about 25 minutes away from our home. Of course, we just happened to be driving by and there were lines and cars lined up waiting. I wanted it and had to have it, NOW -- of course. My husband being the good guy that he is pulled in to the parking lot and we realized that the line was for drive-thru but the wait for carryout looked reasonable.
The smell inside this place is enough to drive me wild and make my mouth water. Of course, they conveniently give out free samples of their famous glazed donuts that are still warm, and literally melt in your mouth. We waited just a few minutes and purchased an assortment (ok, 2 dozen) that were consumed in just a matter of days. (I was pregnant, ok!) But I remember thinking as I ate these "Never again will I consume a 2nd rate donut from Dunkin Donuts or Tim Hortons.. I have found Krispy Kreme!."
...And the Present
Over the past year I can't say that I have frequented Krispy Kreme or really any donut shop too often. But, when I do, its definitely Krispy Kreme. I would probably go there more, but they are a good 25 minutes away so its not the most convenient. (Probably for the best)
I was quite excited to find out that my local Mothers group was having a Moms & Tots outing to the Krispy Kreme shop for a tour. Perfect! Sign me up. When can we go? I knew that free samples would be involved here and thought my son would enjoy a little outing.
Watch 'em get made
If you have a child, chances are they will enjoy going into a Krispy Kreme. The one near us boasts a clear glass viewing window so that you can watch donuts be made. The steps are painted on the window as well. We had the pleasure of a bit of voice-over and trivia facts from the manager of our local shop who did a really good job explaining this so that kids who were the average age of 3 or so could understand.
Even if they didn't understand the donut making process, the toddlers and small children enjoyed seeing the gazillion bits of dough go through a puffer, get fried in the vegetable oil, flipped, going under a waterfall of glaze and through a cooling tunnel. Actually, I fess up, I enjoyed watching it too. Its pretty neat!!! What can I say?
The best part.. EATING 'EM Up!
So, the 5 minute tour is over now its time to eat...Free samples were plenty. Surely my one year old was not going to consume an entire glazed donut and leave some for Mom? Nope, of course not. My son, at age 1, knows and recognizes the power and pleasure of a Krispy Kreme donut.
I skipped my free sample and went right for a chocolate frosted creme filled. Yumm!
After we were done I conveniently went through the Drive Thru and picked up 1 dozen assorted donuts of my favorite flavors (Chocolate frosted creme filled, cinnamon powder apple filled, and glazed raspberry filled). They'll be gone soon, I'm sure.
Environment, Service, etc
Unlike other donut shops in my area Krispy Kreme is not a dive. Its well lit, bright, and clean. They have a large restroom facility with a changing table. The dining area is family friendly and they have high chairs available. Everything is done in white, red and green and has a retro 1950's diner type look.
Krispy Kreme gives out free paper hats with the Krispy Kreme logo to kids, and to adults who want them. They don't just do this in the dining room either. If you go through drive-thru and they see you have a child with you they'll give you a hat! If you have a child that likes dressing up or playing make believe, these are fun for them. Or, if you are like me, and enjoy putting your child in silly hats for photo ops, this is great.
What's on the menu
Donuts in many varieties (glazed, filled, non-filled, powder, frosted, etc). My favorites are the traditional glazed and of course the chocolate frosted creme filled. But for the more adventurous they usually have a "Donut of the Month" - this month its a cheescake one that looked pretty good! In the past I had a pumpkin flavored one that was super yummy. Donuts can be purchase individually or by the dozen. A dozen will run you between 5 and 6 dollars whether you get all glazed or assorted.
Krispy Kreme also serves coffee (100% arabica bean), tea, milk, juice etc.
In addition to donuts and drinks they also sell a variety of Krispy Kreme merchandise including mugs, T-shirts, hats, and collectibles. I've passed on all of this since I'm just there for the donuts!
Other important stuff
Locations vary, but by us you have the option of Drive Thru, Eat-In, or Carry-Out. By us their is a 24 hour drive-thru and the dine-in or carryout is available from early in the morning through late at nite.
If the HOT light is on that means that hot glazed donuts are being served. The HOT light is usually on from early morning til lunch time and then again later in the day
As for nutrition.. Well, its a donut so its not exactly the best thing in the world for you. But its also not the worst. One glazed donut has 200 calories and 100 of those are from fat. A detailed nutritional breakdown is available on the KK website at http://www.krispykreme.com
