Pros:good, inexpensive fast-food
Cons:not one in every city
The Bottom Line: If you like greasy chili like I do, try the chili pups or chili cheese fries.
When I was a kid, we did not have a Krystal restaurant around, but I loved eating there when we would go out of town. Several years ago, we finally got one in our area.
Service
Krystal is a fast-food restaurant. Like most fast-food chains, you have the option of drive-thru service, or you can place your order when you enter, and seat yourself in the dining area or outside at the patio tables. A lot of fast-food restaurants will have your food ready for you when you reach the pick-up window, but Krystal is slower than most. However, you can always expect the food to be hot and fresh.
Decor
Every Krystal that I have been to has been red and white, inside and out. The building is usually white with a red and white awning. There are usually red patio tables outside covered by red umbrellas. Inside is mostly white with some red padding on the chairs. They don't have a lot of decorations. There will usually be a plant or two, and a few pictures. They are usually black and white pictures of older Krystal buildings from the 50s or 60s. I didn't realize the restaurant had been around that long.
What to eat
The krystal is their signature burger. It is a small, square burger that comes in a small, square box. It has a thin piece of square meat on a fluffy square bun. Do you get the picture? It's square. It comes with mustard, diced onions, a pickle, and is packed with flavor. You can get them with or without cheese. I've heard they're similar to White Castle, but there isn't a White Castle in this area, so I can't compare them. Most of the time, you can get a sack of 10 krystals for $3.95. If you don't have anyone to share them with though, you can get 3 or 4 in a combo meal. The combos come with fries and a medium drink for about $3.95. In addition to the burgers, they serve miniature hot dogs with chili and/or cheese, and miniature corn dogs. These are called chili pups and corn pups. They also have krystal chiks, which is a square chicken sandwich with mayonnaise and a pickle. I haven't tried these, but my husband thinks they rock! On the side, you can get fries or onion rings. The fries are not the best among the fast-food restaurants, unless you get them with chili and cheese. I love the greasy chili and shredded cheese that comes on the chili cheese fries.
Breakfast is also served at Krystal, but I have never eaten it. They serve the basic biscuit combos. In addition, they also have a krystal sunriser. As you may have guessed, it comes on the square krystal bun instead of a biscuit. I believe it comes with sausage, egg, and cheese, but who needs a sunriser when you can order krystal burgers early in the morning?
The Krystal in my town also has a Baskin Robbins inside. I try to avoid eating inside, because I just can?t resist an ice-cream on my way out. Most of the restaurants I've seen do not have the additional ice-cream area. I guess we're just lucky.
Overall
Krystal is good, cheap fast-food with a little more variety than the regular burger joint. My 21 month old son loves them! Dine here with friends, or your grandma. Almost everyone is sure to find something!
