Wake up and smell Le Peep

Written: Mar 15 '05 (Updated Mar 15 '05)
Pros:Lots of breakfast and brunch choices; fresh ingredients
Cons:Only open until 2PM.
The Bottom Line: A nice change for Sunday brunch.

Le Peeps is a national restaurant chain that can be found in many states. Le Peep is a small sit-down restaurant that only serves breakfast and brunch. They are usually located in a strip mall. You can check out their website to see if there's one in your area: http://www.lepeep.com/national.asp however the list doesn't seem to be updated with newer locations. Le Peeps is a top rated breakfast restaurant in Orlando and you will see just as many locals as tourists in this restaurant.

Le Peeps serves an American cuisine. They are open at 6:30AM-2PM on the week days and 6AM-2:30PM on the weekends however some locations may be different. We usually show up around 9AM and it’s very busy, especially on the weekends. Since they share the parking lot with other establishments it is sometimes difficult to find a parking place. Not only is there possibly a wait to be seated, it also takes awhile to get the food. I have tried going there on a weekday morning when it was not busy and I found a long wait for the food as well.

The environment is relaxing and is somewhere you might want to go with friends and visit while waiting. I’ve seen lots of different types of people there from families, to a couple friends, to an individual person working while they have coffee. We took a visitor here once and they enjoyed the meal. We were able to talk without hearing plates and pans banging in the kitchen.

The food is certainly different; I like to go to places that serve food that I can not recreate at home. There’s a pretty big selection to choose from which should fill anyone’s particular needs. We actually need awhile to pick a dish because there are a lot of interesting choices.

They have several light breakfast items such as bananas and yogurt, pancake sandwich, fruit-filled crapes, gooey buns, and more.

There are some traditional choices such as steak and eggs, biscuits and gravy, eggs benedict, and omelets.

There’s a sweeter selection of pancakes, Belgian waffles, and French toast.

Their signature dish is the Panhandler Skillet. The entree arrives to your table in the skillet. It has peasant potatoes on the bottom topped with fresh vegetables a basted egg and cheese melted over.

There is also a large selection for lunch such as crepes, Panini sandwiches, and an assortment of other sandwiches such at a blacked salmon steak, fajita pita, Cajun chicken, and more.

They also have a large beverage selection of coffee, espresso, smoothies, juices, milk shakes, fresh squeezed lemonade, and sodas. Drinks are often served in carafes. Coffee is bottomless of course.

The restaurant is suitable for children. We were able to use a high chair, and the kids were given crayons and a page to color. There is a children’s menu but our kids shared some pancakes off of the adult menu.

After breakfast is over you take your receipt to the cashier in front to check out. Sometimes we find a coupon in the coupon pack that comes in our mailbox at home however the coupons are not valid on the weekend.

One thing that concerns me is that I had different experiences at different locations which tend to be common with National restaurants. I went to a newly opened one off Dale Mabry Highway in Tampa, FL and it was excellent. The restaurant was very clean and attractive and the service was above average.

My experience with the Orlando location off Kirkman road was not as pleasant. The restaurant seemed to be older, the waitress was too coffee-house for my liking, and the general ambiance was not as pleasant at that location. The meal was still good.

There is a lot to select from off of the menu. The food portions are generous and we’ve never left hungry. The food does not compare to other sit-down breakfast restaurants because the flavor is entirely different. The food has a homemade taste to it, it’s not greasy at all. It does not remind me of a coffee-house.

The prices are under $10 a plate, most around $7.00. By the time we tacked a drink to our selection we were at $10 a person for each breakfast which I think is fairly expensive for breakfast food. This would be a nice place to go when you have time to wait for such as Sunday brunch, to celebrate Mother’s day, or a morning out with friends.
