I am a cowgirl at heart and couldn't resist the decor and theme of Longhorn Steakhouse. I ate at the Boston, MA location in December 2005.
DECOR AND AMBIANCE
Longhorn Steakhouse has a vintage cowboy feeling to it. The walls are made of light colored stone. Cow and Bull heads are mounted on the wall. Ropes shaped like lassos, stuffed armadillos and vintage cowboy photos also make an appearance. The lights are a warm copper color. There is country western music playing in the background. Although the decor had a chain restaurant too-perfect feel to it, I really liked the theme. I didn't care for the three table tents on our table advertising various menu and drink items. They took up too much space and were too commercial.
The patrons in the restaurant looked mostly like college kids although that is probably more because of the area than the restaurant. This chain restaurant seemed very casual, like Chili's or TGI Friday's.
THE FOOD
This restaurant calls itself a steakhouse and there were lots of steak variations on the menu which ranged from a $8 cheeseburger to entrees around $15 that looked like ribs, steaks and chops. There were also chicken and fish entrees as well as soups and salads. Judging from the table tents, there were also quite a few desserts.
We got a partial loaf of bread for free with the meal. It looked and tasted like whole wheat and was warm. I liked the flavor and how it was served. I ordered a cheeseburger for dinner. It was cooked just how I asked for it. I had to preorder my condiments which I didn't care for. I like to put my own condiments on. Other than that, I really liked the cheeseburger and it was one of the best that I have had. It came with fries and even the fries were tasty and the whole dish was hot which I appreciated. My co-diner got a salad with steak on it. He liked it but wasn't wowed by it either.
I thought my $8 cheeseburger was a good value but thought some of the other entrees, at around $15, might be a little overpriced. I might have felt differently about this restaurant if I dropped another $15 to eat there.
SERVICE
When we entered the restaurant, we were greeted by a grouchy hostess who seemed barely able to bother to tell us that it would be a five minute wait. This was annoying because we could see many empty, cleared tables in the restaurant. After the five minute wait, she seated us and gave us menus.
Once our waitress arrived, service picked up quickly. Our waitress was friendly and took our orders correctly. The food came out promptly and our water was refilled. The check came when we needed it and she cleared away all the dirty dishes. If it wasn't for the lousy greeting, I would have raved about the service here - I guess first impressions are everything.
OTHER THOUGHTS
They have a liquor license and it looked like they had an elaborate drink menu. I spotted a mango margarita on the menu which is my favorite. I wasn't in the mood to drink on my last visit, but plan to return to check them out.
I didn't see a kids menu or, for that matter, any kids. The website of the restaurant (www.longhornsteakhouse.com) states that there is a kids menu available.
The restaurant looked to be handicapped friendly.
This restaurant is not vegetarian friendly.
They take credit cards.
Parking costs a few dollars. There is not much free street parking nearby.
FINAL RECOMMENDATION
I liked Longhorn Steakhouse and would definitely go back. I thought the food was a good value for the price and I liked the theme and decor.
