| felixderkater's Full Review: Long John Silver's |
Long John Silvers provides a fairly unique product. This is the company that came up with the idea of fast food seafood. Among a long row of fast food restaurants, there is great variety in signage, but little variety to be had among the menu choices. There are the chain hamburger, fries, and a drink restaurants. There are the fried chicken, a biscuit, and a drink restaurants. Then, looking a bit further, there is a random curiosity. One notices a fast food restaurant with a fish prominently displayed on its sign. Not only do they advertise fish, but also chicken, shrimp, and even lobster on occasion.
When you enter an LJS establishment, you will see a large, varied menu. There is food to suit both seafood lovers and land lovers. You will find fish of several varieties, shrimp, chicken, and from time to time, a random addition like Lobster Bites. You can get your fish fried or broiled, and you have the option of upgrading to a higher quality fish like Alaskan Flounder. You also have the option of choosing a sandwich if you need something to eat in a hurry.
One can get a meal for anywhere between $3.49 and $7.49. The combination platters generally give an oversized portion of food. This is both good and bad, as one leaves very well filled, but also having just eaten in excess of 2,000mg of Sodium and 100g of fat.
Being that I travel a good bit, some form of fast food at least a couple times a week has become routine. As a seafood lover, Long John Silvers is appealing simply based on the fact that they offer a type of food I love in a form I need to maintain good timing on the road. I am indeed thankful for the opportunity to have something other than a burger or fried chicken, but there are some things that need improving upon.
For one, LJSs foods are almost all very greasy and sometimes so salty as to be repulsive. You will definitely want to get a cup of water to drink, as your thirst will increase with every bite. The quality of the food varies depending on location and the staff working at the time. Most of the time, the fish is well cooked and still juicy. Other times, it is tough to bite into, and starting to dry out. Their shrimp are similarly varied. Many times you will get a great tasting treat, but again, there are times when they are nearly inedible because they are so tough. Most of the time they dont have a strong odor, but sometimes there is a powerful smell of seafood emanating from behind the breading, which seems to suggest they may not have been kept fresh before cooking.
The restaurants themselves are usually a little bit on the dirty side. They chose a bad style of flooring, which seems common to all of their restaurants, which collects dirt, and just looks generally unclean on its own. The last time I actually went inside one of their restaurants, there tables were dirty, and an employee was arguing with her manager about why she shouldnt have to wipe off tables. Now I generally avoid the eat-in option, and opt for a trip through the drive-through.
Even with all of the negatives, LJS remains a good restaurant in my book because there is no other place I can drive through and have a plate of shrimp in hand in less than two minutes.
