| HawgWyld's Full Review: Long John Silver's |
Need to pick up a quick lunch or dinner, but you're not in the mood for a burger? Burned out on Arby's? Don't worry a bit about it. Long John Silver's has you covered.
Long John Silver's, of course, specializes in seafood -- and chicken. Can't forget about the chicken. Yes sir, greasy fish, shrimp and chicken are the thing here, and I just love the stuff. I'm not sure what kind of fish Long John Silver's uses and the shrimp is a little stringy, but I love the stuff. Give me a piece of fish from Long John Silver's and let me smother it in that hot sauce and malt vinegar the restaurant has on hand, and I'm one happy kid.
Now, I was always curious about the name. Why name the place after a blood-thirsty pirate? I could see the ads now, "Harrrr, kids! Come join Long John Silver and his scurvy, black-hearted crew as they terrify landlubbers through rape, pillaging and murder. Will you join the merry band of pirates, or will you be keel-hauled? The choice is yours. Harrrr!"
All kidding aside, Long John Silver's is one of those things I enjoy, but I couldn't tell you why, exactly. Perhaps I'm addicted to the malt vinegar or something, but I find myself craving the place once every couple of months or so. It's a bit more expensive than many fast food places, and my Wife, our three-year-old son and I can usually eat there for around $15.00.
The food is greasy and, as such, heavy. There are some baked items available, but I love that fried fish and can't avoid it. Sure, it's swimming in grease, but it's pretty darn good, as far as I'm concerned. The chicken is a bit less greasy, but it's also deep-fried and, for some reason, a little dry. The shrimp, also deep-fried is greasy and a bit stringy. What's the traditional side item? Greasy french fries! Like I said, there are some baked items available, but I've never tried them and can't comment on them.
So, Long John Silver's remains one of my favorites. After taking a good, hard look at myself, I believe I enjoy it because I love that greasy stuff! I'm native to the South and, as such, have a steady diet of greasy, fried food. Long John Silver's is a good addition to that, and is unique in that it's greasy, fried seafood rather than more traditional fare.
