| Bryan_Carey's Full Review: Long John Silver's |
With more than 1,300 locations worldwide, Long John Silvers is the largest seafood fast- food restaurant in the United States. It was first opened in 1969 and it now has locations in 35 states and in a few foreign countries.
Long John Silver's has an average selection of foods. They serve fish and chicken planks, fish and chicken sandwiches, shrimp, salads, and various pies for desserts. There are also several side items, like coleslaw, hush puppies, corn on the cob, and cheesesticks. If you're looking for anything besides fish or chicken, as far as meats go, you had better go someplace else. Seafood and chicken are the only meats offered.
The food is, overall, acceptable and edible, but that's it. The battered fish is so- so; the chicken planks are small and have too much breading and no real distinct flavor; the fries are bland; and the desserts are ok, but the only option is pie. The best item on the menu is the corn on the cob, but it doesn't take much skill to make corn on cob. The sandwiches aren't too bad, either, but they are not good enough to make you want to come back.
The nutritional value of Long John Silver's food is not very good. This might surprise some people, considering that they specialize in fish and chicken. But, because of the deep- frying process, the foods are all pretty high in fat. For example, a single piece of battered fish contains 230 calories and 13 grams of fat and a chicken plank contains 140 calories and 8 grams of fat. So, these items both get about 50 percent of their calories from fat. The nutritional value of the desserts is what you would expect: 40 to 50 percent of calories are from fat. The only low- fat item on the menu is the salads. An Ocean Chef Salad has 130 calories and just 2 grams of fat and a Grilled Chicken Salad has 140 calories and 2.5 grams of fat.
The best thing Long John Silver's has going for it would be its low prices. You can get a combo meal, with various combinations of fish, chicken, side items, and a drink, for a price ranging from only $2.99 to 3.99. And, Long John Silver's frequently has coupon offers to help cut your costs even further.
Long John Silver's is the type of restaurant that you go to from time to time, when you get a craving for seafood but you don't feel like spending a large sum of money to get something good. The food really needs to be improved, but it's edible enough to justify an occasional visit.
