There I was. Actually - no - there were we were. My wife and I just walked out of Madison Garden in Manhattan, and we were trying to decide over a meal or a snack. Pretzels? Or hot dogs with fries? They both sounded great, of course, but we decided that a fast-food meal would better fit our appetite. Not that I wouldnt mind paying $70 for a fine meal in Manhattan.
When first walking into Nathans Famous, I noticed that the restaurant was dirty, ugly, and cramped. After further inspection, I noticed that it was absolutely filthy. There were straw rappers, ketchup packets, napkins, and fries scattered all over the floor. The staff couldnt care less about the disgusting appearance of their restaurant.
There is no real decor for the restaurant - at least the one that I visited. The floor had an ugly, outdated brown color. It reminded me of those older McDonalds restaurants. There were no pictures on the wall, and the lighting was poor. To say the least, the restaurant is where you would not want to eat - especially in Manhattan. I was actually surprised at how dingy it was. However, us being the only people in the restaurant told me something negative.
The menu is quite small for a fast-food joint. There are onion rings, hot dogs, hot dog nuggets, chicken tenders, cheese steak, fish fillet, and of course - fries. There are also other items mostly revolving around meat such as the chili dog and "chargrilled" hamburgers. Breakfast sandwiches such as egg and cheese, bacon and egg, sausage and cheese are also available at some of the restaurants. The prices are a bit high (for the quality) at roughly $5 for a sandwich and $3 for fries.
The kids meal comes with fries, a beverage, a toy, and the main food. The main food can be a hot dog, hot dog nuggets, or chicken tenders. The value meals are similar but without the toy and everything is larger. The main food choices are: frankfurter, chicken tender sandwich, chicken sandwich, cheese steak, or a burger. The value meals are more around $6-$7 depending on what size you buy.
I had the hot dog nuggets value meal. My wife and I split it hoping that it would demolish our hunger until we arrived at my aunts house for a real meal. When ordering, we werent even greeted with a smile or a welcome to Nathans attitude. It actually took awhile for one of the workers to realize that we were waiting to order.
Finally, everything was all said an done. At least thats what I thought.
How many hot dog nuggets you want? the worker asked with a slight Russian accent.
What are the different amounts that they come in?
She completely ignored my question and asked me again. At that point, I wasnt quite sure what to do. There were no quantities listed on the menu. I told her that we would like the medium. Doesnt the medium mean that a certain amount of hot dog nuggets are included? My wife was also unpleased with the whole situation, so she just told the lady to give us six of them. The order process took a total of ten minutes.
We sat down to eat five minutes after we ordered, food in hand and happy that we would break our fast. I was very disappointed, yet not surprised, when I sunk my teeth into the first hot dog nugget. It was extremely hot, yet it was dry with no real taste. The mini-hot dog was breaded along the outside, and I was hoping that it would make it taste somewhat like a corn dog. Instead, it tasted like pure crap. The fries were also overly salty and half of them were burnt. The Coke was flat and wasnt even filled to the top of the cup.
While Ive had much better experiences at other fast-food restaurants, I cant say anything positive about Nathans Famous. It has the same qualities as its partner, Miami Subs. The service was absolutely horrible and unprofessional; the prices were high for the quality of the food; the atmosphere was dirty and ugly. So why would I eat at Nathans again if I can get better quality at a McDonalds or a Burger King? As far as Im concerned, I will never eat at Nathans Famous again.
