| dtobias's Full Review: Nathan's Famous |
I was born in Brooklyn, but got out of there at an early age. However, I still had relatives there for a long time, so I made frequent trips there as a kid, and they often included a stop at Coney Island for lunch at Nathan's. I haven't been to the original location in many years now, so I'm glad they've branched out and opened in other locations. True, the purists will say that the only true Nathan's food and Nathan's atmosphere is in the original Coney Island location, and some of them say that even that has declined in quality since it became a big corporate chain. They're probably right, but I still enjoy eating at the Nathan's "chain" locations (and, where I live now in Florida, Coney Island would be a rather long trip for lunch).
For years, though, I lived in an area with no Nathan's branches (it's not nearly as widespread as other fast-food chains like McDonald's), and thus only got to try their food while on trips elsewhere. (Including New York City, where for a long time there was a Nathan's at Times Square, but I think that's closed now.) Fortunately, there is a branch right near where I work now, so I can go to lunch there any time I want. My mom and my doctor would prefer I didn't, though, since most of their stuff is pretty high in cholesterol. (Not that other fast food is much better…) It tastes good, though!
For those looking for a change of pace from the typical fast food fare of burgers or chicken, Nathan's is the leading hot dog restaurant. Yes, their franks are good, but the highlight of the meal for me is their French fries. Not just narrow slivers of potato like the other fast food places serve, Nathan's fries are big tasty hunks of potato. They're best as cheese fries (but that'll really get the cholesterol-watchers hyper). Other main dishes besides hot dogs are also available, including burgers and Philly cheesesteaks, though these things are done better by other restaurants; hot dogs are Nathan's specialty. But if you don't like hot dogs, you might go to Nathan's and get one of those other things just to get their fries with it.
The prices are a little higher than usual for fast food (the cheapest combo meal is $4.99 at the one near me, and my most recent meal totaled $6.24 with tax), but the quality makes it worth it. Try it if it's in your area, and pester the company to open a restaurant in your area if it's not already there. Also keep an eye out for discount coupons; the Nathan's near me usually gives out coupons with each meal that are good the following month, so if you remember to save and use them, you can get savings such as $1 off on combo meals. Didn't the hot dogs cost a nickel when Nathan's was founded in the 1910s? Those days are sure long gone.
