When I was a little girl, my grandma lived in Coney Island. She lived in a tenement building, three sets of stairs, no elevators. Back in the 50's Nathan's was a small , but wonderful addition to the entire atmosphere.
I would glance out the third story window and listen to the screams of the riders on the "Cyclone" one of the original wooden tracked roller coasters that still reigns over the boardwalk at Coney Island. What memories I have.
The sights were like a carnival-people jogging the boardwalk, the Coney Island sideshows, Steeplechase rides. There was even a parachute ride which took you up a giant tower and would let you float down to the boardwalk. There would be the smell of cotton candy, candy apples, and salt water all mixed together.
This was the world where Nathan's hot dogs existed. Back then there was only one Nathan's. The people would line up in separate cue lines for each wonderful, aromatic, treat. I remember standing in line for a steaming piece of hot corn- 25 cents. That was such a treat. They also served wonderful all beef hot dogs. Very spicy with a hint of garlic. Their french fries were the absolute best. Not some greasy stringy mess served in an oil blotted paper bag. No, each fry was hand crinckle cut, served in a small paper boat, lots of salt and ketchup, and served with a tiny fork. I still go to Nathan's just for the french fries.
In the original Nathans, there was no seats. You stood at a bar and looked out at the hungry masses of people passing by.
They also serve many things in their current locations from hamburgers to pastrami deli sandwiches, but whenever I bite into a Nathan's hot dog I still hear the Coney Island Cyclone screams, and smell the saltwater off the ocean. I think if you close your eyes and dream you can hear it and sense it too.
