Ever enter a bakery and the first thing that hits you is the aroma of fresh baked bread making you instantly hungry? Well, add the scent of cinnamon to the aroma and that will give you a hint of how wonderful it is to walk into Panera’s Cafes!
I’d forgotten how great Panera’s was until the other day when several of us decided to do take out. I was the “runner” and when I opened that door, my senses were instantly flooded with pure delight! Aside from the wonderful aroma, straight ahead of me was a long glass covered area full of pastries that tempt you the moment you see them! Let me see if I can paint you a picture? I took one of their menus so you wouldn’t miss a beat!
Let’s start with morning temptations! If you’re hungry for pastries, then you have a plethora of choices. For starters, they have bagels---sourdough, plain, dutch apple, chocolate chip, asiago cheese, cinnamon raisin, sesame seed, nine grain, everything, blueberry, and cinnamon crunch. A Baker’s dozen will cost you $6.00. Add $2 more and they’ll add 5 more bagels. A “Bagel Pack” is 13 bagels and two cream cheese tubs for $10. Here’s your choices of cream cheeses: veggie, raspberry, sun-dried tomato, honey walnut, chive, salsa, hazelnut, and salmon. Salmon costs a little more.
OK, so you don’t want bagels. Well, then, you’re in big trouble because trying to decide amongst the rest of the options is mind-boggling. They have cinnamon rolls, pecan rolls, muffins, bear claws, coffee cake, strudel, cookies, scones, and cobblestones. What’s a cobblestone, you ask? Oh My God! That’s what a cobblestone is! A combination of cinnamon, sugar, nuts, and bread shaped like a huge muffin/roll. Did I mention their danishes? Apple, cheese, cherry, gooey butter, German chocolate, and Georgia peach!
To round off their fabulous bakery, you will also find croissants (french, apple, cheese, chocolate, and raspberry-cheese), specialty breads (asiago cheese, three seed sourdough, fiesta, sun-dried tomato, pesto, olive, and cinnamon raisin). Then there’s their sandwich breads (sourdough, sourdough strip, french, french strip, nine grain, honey wheat, hearty grain, rye, pumpernickel, swirl rye, croissant, tomato basil, and focaccia). Sourdough breads come in baguettes, loaves, rounds, soup bowls, and rolls.
Lunch at Panera’s is just as wonderful! My favorite is their Fandango Salad. It is a mixture of field greens (my friends teased me asking if I’d picked the weeds outside for my salad!) and romaine lettuce, with toasted walnuts, gorgonzola cheese, mandarin oranges, and fat-free raspberry dressing. I ate half of it and saved the rest to share with Bruce. He had no trouble finishing it off. You get a nice piece of sourdough bread with your salad, too.
They have lots of other salads including chicken oriental and Greek. Soups and sandwiches are,of course, other delicious menu items. They offer 4 different soups daily, which changes depending on the day of the week. They all sound very hearty and filling---would be a great option for vegetarians as three out of the four choices will be meatless. There's a veggie sandwich, too, which is loaded with lettuce, tomato, sprouts, provel cheese, cucumbers, red onion, and dill sauce on nine grain bread.
Beverages are not to be your norm, either. Their Home-Style lemonade is purrfect for a hot day! If you’re a coffee lover, even those of you from Seattle would be satisfied! Their Espressos, Cappuccinos, Caffe Lattes, Mochas, Javas, and icy Mocha Blasts are “sweet”!
Oh yeah, I almost forgot! On their menu they tell you about "Operation Dough-Nation". Every purchase feeds back into the community. They collect cash donations, which are matched and donated to local hunger relief and other charitable organizations. Unsold bread is given to hunger relief agencies at the end of the day. Fund raising groups can sell special coupons for their products and keep half the proceeds. And they donate products and gift certificates to benefit a variety of charities and causes.
So,All Right Already! I give up! If this hasn’t tempted you to find yourself a Panera’s, then you’re hopeless! I guarantee there will be several “somethings” waiting there just for you, so what are you waiting for? See you there! I’m gone!
