On Line Delivery Service Brings New Meaning To Pizza Delivery

Written: Mar 06 '01
Pros:Easy Navigation, Good selection, Fast Service, Delivery Driver was friendly
Cons:Telephone service is very lacking, needs etiquette classes for phone people
The Bottom Line: I recommend this online service for everyone that is thinking of ordering a pizza. Try to order it early so you do not get caught in busy, internet traffic.

Do you hate talking on the telephone especially when you want to order food to be delivered to your home? I have found a great new way to order delicious food online and never speak to any one. Introducing Papa John’s Online Pizza Delivery Service with their easy-to-navigate web site! It is located at http://www.papajohns.com. This site works best with Internet Explorer 5.

One day while I was staying home with my sick child, I really wanted to order pizza but I did not want my child to be screaming and crying while I placed the order. On top of that, I hate talking on the telephone. So I decided to try out the only place I know that delivers and has an online site to place orders.

Papa John’s Pizza is a great way to satisfy those pizza cravings with their thick, original crust or their thin crust with a wide variety of toppings to create the perfect pizza. Papa John’s also offers two liters of soft drinks that can be delivered such as Sprite, Coke, or Diet Coke. Bread sticks and Cheese sticks are also on their menu.

Papa John’s Pizza advertises their specials that range from $11.99 to $17.99 usually and gives a family a fair choice of types of specials to choose from. I personally like the two large pizzas, one with the Works and one with two toppings for $17.99. I can satisfy my kids and my husband by selecting this combination. Other specials may include two large one toppings and one large two toppings pizza with a 2-liter soft drink for specially advertised prices.

The Menu

There are three sizes: Small (10”), Large (14”), and Extra Large (16”) in both original crust (my favorite) or thin. The original crust comes with garlic butter to dip the crust into, and the thin crust comes with a special cheese/spice container.

There are combination pizzas with selected toppings already available:

The Garden Special: Mushrooms, Onions, Black Olives, and Bell Peppers

All The Meats: Pepperoni, Ham, Bacon, Beef, and Pork Sausage

The Works: Extra Cheese, Pepperoni, Italian Sausage, Ham, Bell Peppers, Onions, Black Olives, and Mushrooms

Other Toppings available not mentioned above are: Pineapple, Jalapenos, Banana Peppers, and Anchovies.

Using the online ordering area was much easier than calling them in my opinion. All I had to do was to register a User ID and password, give them my name, address, and any special delivery instructions, and I was good to go. It was that simple!

Ease of Ordering
I placed my order in less time that I ever had on the telephone, and no one put me on hold! I chose a special since I found one to match my circumstances which was the large pizza with two toppings and a 2-liter bottle of coke. The site asked how I was paying for this, and I chose by “check”. The biggest problem with this was I could not receive a total so I could have the check all filled out for the delivery driver. Since taxes are different everywhere and tax was NOT included in the final total, I had to wait to finish writing my check until the driver arrived which is a minor inconvenience.

Another part of ordering that almost confused me was how to choose a two topping pizza, but I quickly figured out how it worked. It is obvious how to pick a half one topping and half another topping, but for the two toppings, I had to pick a topping and the screen refreshed with what looked like a new page. In reality, it had accepted my first topping selection and was waiting for my second selection. I chose the second topping, and it refreshed like the first. Once I scrolled around the page, I was able to see that both of my toppings were picked, and all I had to do was select what type of soft drink I wanted to be delivered.

I received an email that confirmed that my local Papa John’s Pizza received my order, and (as always) was relayed that it would be around 45 minutes before the pizza would arrive. When my pizza arrived, I could tell exactly how long it took since the email stated the time of the order, and it took only 30 minutes (I did not order at peak hours where it will take longer or the site might time out due to traffic). My pizza was piping hot, and the driver was friendly.

Restaurant Locator
Are you wondering if your area has a Papa John’s Pizza that uses this service? No problem. Their web site also has a Restaurant Locator that can help you find out whether there is a Papa John’s that is able to accommodate you from the web. You can find this added feature at http://www.papajohns.com/locator/index.htm. The map shows the United States and two special links for Hawaii and Alaska not shown on the map. Click on your state, and the link takes you to an expandable listing of the areas in that state that have this online delivery service including their street address and telephone number.

Financial News
One other feature that really impressed me was their News Section containing Papa John’s financial information. The links to different news updates were recent, and it looked well maintained. They have a very good web design team.

Kid’s Page
There is a Kid’s Section with fun facts, a Maze page, a Dot-To-Dot page that once completed shows a cute picture of Mr. Slices (their mascot), Seek And Find which features a picture of a Papa John’s kitchen and you have to find 15 Mr. Slices cleverly hidden within the page, and finally a page full of differently sized Papa John’s Pizza wallpaper for your computer. Now the last one goes a bit too far, but it is a neat idea that this company has gone to so many lengths to entertain the web surfer.

Nutrition
The nutrition page is really great if you want to lose your appetite and/or are dieting. Here you will find the following statistics:

For One slice of Original Crust Pizza
Cheese Pepperoni Sausage All the Meats Garden Special The

Enough of the “nutritional” values. Seeing what we are eating in these terms really deflate one’s appetite rather quickly. Perhaps they should re-think this portion of the site for future sales purposes. :)

Conclusion
I believe this site is a great addition to the internet and helps make convenient a once telephone-only type of service. To me, it seemed more personal with the full attention of the web site guiding me through my selections than a near-rude teenager rambling out a line as fast as he can before he puts me on hold.

This is a great feature for busy households and pizza lovers alike.
