| gerper's Full Review: Papa John's Pizza |
Having worked my way through college delivering pizza's for Domino's, I saw many nights of pizza. For five long years, I smelled of pizza, and it took just as many for me to finally enjoy it again. Now that I live in a small town, with Domino's and Pizza Hut being the only delivery options, I usually go for Pizza Hut (I'll let you guess why). Sure, there is a Papa Murphy's in town, but sometimes, I want someone else to do the cooking.
A few weeks ago, some of my co-workers had Papa John's pizza, and told me how tasty it was. One of them, a New York native, went so far as to say that it gave Pagliacci's (a local chain here in Seattle), a run for it's money. This, I thought, was too good to be true. So, on one of my nights off this week, I sought out the mighty Papa John's and took the pizza for a test.
Papa John's was founded in 1984 by "Papa" John Schnatter and is now a chain of nearly 2,400 stores in 47 states. The secret of the success of the chain is to use fresh dough, cheese and ingredients. Papa John's also boasts a "vine-ripened" tomato sauce that is packaged within six hours of picking the vegetable.
As with many pizza chains today, Papa John's only offers take out and delivery, but does have a system where you can order your pizza off of the internet (if you are too lazy/busy to phone it in). As I mentioned, there was no Papa John's who delivered to my house, so I had to venture to Federal Way to pick up the pie and I am happy to say that it was worth the aggravative 40 minute drive.
Food - Papa John's offers only pizza and bread sticks (or cheese sticks). No cookie dough, or wings here, as Papa John's believes in concentrating on making just a basic product and making it well. The pizza comes in three sizes: small (10"), large (14"), and extra large (16") and starts out at around 7.00 for a small, and 11.50 for a large (cheese). There are specials to fit just about any price range, but I stuck with the basic two item large for $11.99. After getting the pizza home, I did have to reheat it a bit, and found it warmed up nicely, and did not get soggy, as many pies do. The crust was chewy, but not tough, and was quite tasty. The toppings were plentiful, and the cheese melted nicely and had a good flavor. I might add that the pizza was not greasy (like Pizza Hut's), and had a nice taste and texture to it, similar to what Domino's had in the early 80's (which I happened to like). I should make mention of the sauce, as it had a good flavor. Sweet, and not too spicy, I found it to be the best that I have tasted.
Service - I ordered my pizza as a take-out, and it took about 15 minutes to get it. After talking to some of the staff, I found that delivery is anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes, with 45 minutes being the average. As far as the service itself, it was good, but how hard is it to take an order when the customer is just standing there?
Price - As I mentioned, there are specials to fit just about any price range, and I felt that the pizza was fairly priced. Toppings the "normal" ones that are found at just about any pizza chain: pepperoni, ham, onions, etc. Papa John's does add fresh peppers on the side of your pizza, which gives it a nice flavor. They also have a tasty garlic sauce, again, on the side.
Overall, I was happy with my pizza from Papa John's, and I can honestly say that it was the best pizza that I have had in a long time. Granted, I was only there once, but given my "experience" in the pizza department, it doesn't take me long to decide if it is good pizza or bad. If you are looking for a tasty pizza, with no frills sides and good service, I would highly suggest trying Papa John's, I know that it will be my regular pizza now.
As always, thanks for reading.
