Dismal in California

I have this image that there must be at least one fantastic Papa John's pizza, for how could they get the fawning quotes for their ads otherwise?
The Papa Johns in Chatsworth opened in a former convenience store I had often patronized, since it was within walking distance of my apartment. Naturally, after reading all the ads, I was eager to give it a try, so one rainy day I paid them a visit, grabbed the pizza and eagerly took it home. Note that I gave it the best possible conditions: I took it home instead of having it delivered, and I ate it straight away. Well, I don't think I finished it; it was dismal. I don't remember the details, just that it was sufficiently bad that I didn't want to finish it.
One day, I was visiting my local Ralph's grocery, and someone accosted me offering coupons for Papa John's. I told him I felt the pizza was dismal, and he said that was what he was learning from others as well. He seemed quite put out by the futility of his mission; people tried it, they didn't like it, and there was likely no way to change things, however many glossily-printed coupons you waved in their faces.
So I'd recommend that you avoid Papa John's in California. It might be OK elsewhere; often what happens is that people buy franchises and they are not well controlled by HQ. So pizza in HQ could be excellent, while pizza elsewhere is horrid.
For good quality pizza in California:
* Z Pizza in Newport Beach (see my Newport Beach review)
* Original Pizza, also in Newport Beach (also see my Newport Beach review)
* Chicago Pizza Works in West Los Angeles
* Johnnies, citywide. This is not as good as the top three, but it's very good and there are branches nearly everywhere
I'd love to have more additions to this list, especially near Woodland Hills (where I'm moving at the end of the month).
