| moejeau's Full Review: Peet's Coffee & Tea |
Peet's is a bay area classic! I did my run of working the classic scene - Peet's Coffee, Noah's Bagels and The Claremont Resort. Three years inside the roasting, grinding, and milk steaming espresso-pouring wonderland that we all know by its aroma.
There has been mention of its relationship to that other place - Star$'s. It relationship goes far back, the people who founded Starbucks did it modeling their first stores after Peets. Alfred Peet trained them all on how to choose, roast and serve the best coffee. Peet's supplied them with coffee until they could afford to roast their own.
After some time they were a full functioning coffee roaster and found no need for Peet's coffee. In time Alfred Peet decided to sell his company - there are a few details that go in here but....eventually the company came back on the market for sale and one of the original founders of Starbucks Jerry Baldwin, tired of what the company was becoming decided it was time to move to California purchased Peet's coffee.
There was a deal in place about 10-11 years ago that prohibited Starbucks from opening stores in areas where there was already a Peets Coffee. Once that agreement was up - the explosion of Starbucks hit and they are now on every block.
We used to laugh about them, a large corporation whose largest competitor was a small coffee roaster in Berkeley California with just 30 stores
at that time.
Peet's still brews the best coffee around. Their beans are fresh, roasted just 24 hours before you buy them in the store. They are just quality in every way. There's not much more you can say about it.
I was asked to update my review...
Peet's sells the best coffee in bean form (whole or ground) and already prepared (full menu of espresso drinks and always a good selection of drip) Unlike other places the drip coffee is dumped after a 1/2 hour because of the foul taste the coffee sitting in a hot urn can have.
They have a great selection the loose-leaf tea. Gunpowder is one of my favorites - It's a green tea, hand rolled into little balls. The best thing to do is go to the counter and ask about the different coffees
It does get to the point of coffee snob and will sound like someone at a wine tasting but you will get a good idea of what areas grow coffee that you enjoy.
With tea it is the same, ask what they taste like. They usually have samples available to try. The one thing that they pride themselves on is the quality of their coffee and the people who are selling it.
