| modernmarvel's Full Review: Peet's Coffee & Tea |
This is a review of the Peet's Coffee and Tea in Newton, Massachusetts. I recently moved offices and had to leave behind the Dunkin Donuts on the corner by my old office. I tried a few new coffee places in the area and for the last month have been very loyal to Peet's.
THE COFFEE AND FOOD
I love Peet's coffee. A large coffee is $1.89 which is reasonable compared to other coffee places. The coffee itself is stronger than coffee at Dunkin Donuts but it doesn't have that overly strong, burnt flavor of Starbucks. Also, the large coffee is a good size. It is not quite as big as Dunkin Donuts but large enough to last me through those first couple of work hours when I really need the caffeine push. Also, the coffee is the consistently the same day in and day out so I know what to expect. I don't like the "coffee of the day" places that vary the flavor and intensity of their coffee. I don't mind varying my food but I like my coffee to be stable, like my boyfriends.
The coffee comes in a cup and you have to assemble it yourself at the milk station. There is sugar, equal, sprinkle stuff that smells like chocolate and all varieties of milk and cream. There are also covers and paper sleeves if the coffee is too hot to carry. I like to assemble my coffee myself so I know it is right so this works for me. The milk station is generally clean and well-stocked so it is a quick process to get everything together.
Peet's serves a variety of bagels, muffins, scones and other breakfast pastry. I have become a big fan of the bagels which are small and crusty with lots of flavor. They come sliced with a small tub of cream cheese you have to smear on yourself. They don't toast the bagels or warm up the pastry. A coffee with bagel and cream cheese comes in around $3.50 which is just about what Dunkin Donuts charges. It seems the prices at Peet's are the same but the servings are a bit smaller however the quality is higher.
Peet's also serves a lot of varieties of teas. As a caffeine addict, I don't really venture into teas but it seems that there is quite a variety to pick from.
SERVICE
Service at Peet's is counter service. All of the service seems efficient and friendly. I rarely wait in line more than a couple of minutes and my order is served up quickly.
AMBIANCE
Peet's has great coffee house ambiance. There are some nice arm chairs and seating areas. There is a small retail area to browse selling coffee mugs and other implements to make coffee. The coffee shop is usually close to full with moms and kids, college students, seniors and just about anyone in between when I visit each morning. I am usually in a rush off to work but it looks like lots of people like to linger and enjoy coffee and pastry.
FINAL RECOMMENDATION
I really like Peet's. It is a quick stop in the morning to get good coffee and an occasional bagel. The prices are reasonable and the service is good. All in all, I can easily give it five stars.
