Pros: Rich, fresh and delicious. Many varieties and blends.
Cons: Cost more than a can of super market 'stuff.'
The Bottom Line: What I believe to be the very best fresh coffee (beans, ground or brewed) available to the general public. One taste and you'll never again be satisfied with anything less.

| marindavid's Full Review: Peet's Coffee & Tea |
As a child, coffee was ubiquitous in my life. Instant from the A&P and coffee flavored syrup in our milk! To my mother, really 'good' coffee was two teaspoons of the A&P instant. I liked it.
I college, I discovered a stove-top peculator. What it made was so far superior to the instant, I couldn't believe I had drunk that stuff for so long - though the occassional burning flavor of the stove-top was an acquired taste.
Some years later, I was gifted with an electric pot and, using what I thought was the best money could buy (Yuban), I quickly moved past the stove-top gunk. In 1969 I moved to Northern California, lived in North Berkeley and had the good fortune to walk into the first Peet's (at Walnut Square.) My life, as a coffee drinker, has never been the same.
Peet's beans are always fresh and rich. Because they brew it so strongly in their stores, people often think that it is too 'strong' for them and need to understand that what makes coffee strong is less the coffee itself than it is how MUCH of it you use! If it tastes to strong for your tastes, use less.
I brew it by the single cup for myself (using a Melita drip) and use a Braun electric pot when there is company coming. I have tried MANY varieties and have settled on a 50/50 blend of French Roast and DeCaf French Roast, blended and ground together! It is truly succulent.
Now available at many supermarkets and specialty stores (I even found it being served at Au Bon Pain in Harvard Square, Cambridge the last time I was in Boston) it is best bought fresh from a Peet's store. The roastery is in Emeryville, CA and the beans can be purchased online and are delivered in a matter of days.
If you consider yourself to be REAL lover of better-than-just-good coffee, give Peet's a try. I will not undignify it by comparing it to Starbuck's - there is none.
L'chaim!
