I am a relative newcomer to Peet's... I read in a couple magazines that their coffee was the "best in the US," so the cynical side of me was determined to try it and prove that once again the critics were wrong...
Well, what can I say? It turns out *I* was wrong! I have now tried 4 different blends of Peet's coffee (Mocha Java, Major Dickason's, Top, and House) and 3 of the 4 get top marks.
I thought the House Blend was a bit too weak for my taste (medium-bodied), but it should appeal to those who don't care for as strong a roast. I found it to be similar to Starbucks House Blend, but slightly better.
The Mocha Java is my favorite of the lot, and features a super-strong, full-bodied bold taste that I have never come close to with other brands. The other standout of the bunch (and probably the most widely known blend from Peet's) is Major Dickason's Blend. Again, very full-bodied, and super smooth. I, quite frankly, could live on those two without ever feeling a need to try any other brands or varieties.
The downside to Peet's (especially if you have to buy it mail order, as I do) is you definitely pay for the quality. While the price of a pound of Peet's House Blend is comparable to the House Blend from Starbucks (and others), the other Peet's blends (the ones most people will want to buy) range from $10.95 (Top Blend), to $11.95 for a pound of The Major and $12.95 for a pound of Mocha Java. That does not include shipping... so it is a bit tough on the wallet.
All things considered, Peet's is expensive, but worth every penny. It is roasted fresh, dark, and blended to perfection. I have not had better, and I am now a bi-weekly buyer (even though my wallet keeps telling me to stop). I wanted to say that the critics did not know what they were talking about when they proclaimed Peet's as "the best," but I guess to my tastebuds they were right... Highly recommended!
