Uno Chicago Grill - I'm glad they serve more than pizza

Written: Mar 27 '05 (Updated Mar 28 '05)
Pros:Nice selection of foods
Cons:Not my kind of pizza.
The Bottom Line: They offer quick lunches and curbside if you're in a hurry; Lots of choices if you're not in the mood for pizza.

Uno’s is a sit-down restaurant with a Chicago feel to the atmosphere. They offer pizza, sandwiches, pastas, steaks, and more.

There are more than 200 Uno’s which can be found in 32 different states. You can check out their website to see if there is one in your area. It was formally knows as Pizzeria Uno however they now go by Uno Chicago Grill. Their signature dish is the Chicago-style deep dish pizza invented back in 1943.

I’ve always enjoyed going to Uno’s at lunch time and getting a sandwich however this time I went for dinner. Being a Friday night we expected for the restaurant to be crowded but we ended up getting there around 8PM so the place was pretty much empty and the hostess seated us immediately.

It took us a little while to decide because so many things looked good. There were appetizers, salads, soups, pizzas, pasta, steak, ribs, chicken, seafood, and sandwiches to choose from. There are yummy sides such as fries, onion petals, and bread sticks, and there are also some healthy sides to choose from such as fries, broccoli, vegetables, or smashed cauliflower.

Most meals are in the $8-$10 range with $15 the highest price for a large pizza that serves 2 to 3 people. Drinks were $2 and we chose Raspberry flavored ice tea which had free refills.

Since it was so late we were starving so our eyes were bigger than our bellies. We both ordered the 12 ounce French onion soup for $4.49 which had a lot of onion, large croutons, and Swiss cheese melted over the top. We really enjoyed the soup but were soon too full to finish our meals. The last time I went I had the New England Clam Chowder which was also very good. It was the winner at the Boston’s 2003 Chowder Contest.

I had already decided before arriving that I would be having the pizza. The small deep dish pizza serves 1 and the regular serves 2 to 3. There were many choices to choose from but I choose Numero Uno which was Mozzarella, chunky tomato, sausage, pepperoni, mushrooms, onions and green peppers for $8.00. I thought the pizza was a good size and was pleased to find the pizza was loaded with toppings. The toppings were fresh and crunchy. It’s been a very long time since I’ve had a pizza in Chicago so I really can’t compare. I thought the crust was a little greasy and it reminded me of Bisquick for some reason and the underside was a little doughy. I didn’t like the crust at all. They used tomato chunks in place of the sauce which was interesting to try but I didn't like the tomato chunks. The pizza tasted a lot better left over the next day. I needed to eat the pizza with a fork because the soft crust and loaded toppings made the pizza fall apart when handled. I thought their sandwiches were better than the pizza.

My husband chose the Spicy Melt which ham, pepperoni, melted Swiss, red pepper pesto and Jalapeno-Alfredo sauce on a toasted roll. It was served with fresh Cole slaw and thin French fries. He thought that it tasted good however it wasn’t spicy like he anticipated.

There was an advertisement on the table fore desserts which looked very inviting. We contemplated for awhile over a chocolate peanut butter cup, Chicago cheesecake, or Brownie bowl but in the end we had no room for dessert.

The Uno that we went to has been there for as long as I can remember but still looks great. We admired the decorations on the walls and ledges. There were many framed pictures and nick-knacks. The interior walls were done in brick. Looking at the walls for a minute I had a sudden feel for Chicago so I think they did a nice job on the atmosphere that they were re-creating. We sat further inside the restaurant this time and we were able to see the kitchen in back. The workers appeared well groomed and clean.

Our waitress was eager to help us. She was friendly but not pushy and didn’t waste our time with small talk. She answered questions about our menu, refilled our drinks before they were empty, and was quick to clear the table and to bring the check. They had a full staff and everyone seemed to be happy and enjoying their job.

The restaurant is suitable for anyone including children. The kid’s menu is for ages 10 and under and feature a make your own pizza, dinosaur-shaped chicken, mac & cheese, or pasta for $4. Drinks are $1 more.

There is a condensed quick lunch menu Monday – Friday 11AM – 3PM. Curbside pick-up is also available from 11AM – 9PM. Online ordering for pickup is also available in some locations. They do not deliver.

We’ve been to two different locations in Orlando and we have found that the Orlando location off of Colonial drive tastes better and costs less than the one on International drive (tourist location).

We enjoy going to Uno’s on occasion and so far haven’t had a bad experience. Uno’s will continue to be in our restaurant rotation.
