| Jiahong's Full Review: Quizno's |
What is a "quizno"? The word looks Spanish, but is not in either of the Spanish-English dictionaries in our house. On my most recent visit to a Quizno's, I asked the cashier. I figured that those working the sandwich-making lines would be too stunned by a question; they ask the questions (What kind? Everything on it? etc.)
The cashier didn't know. The company's website (www.quiznos.com) -- after years of refusing to release the information -- allows a determined user to find out the nutrition data. To take one example, the new "5-meat stack" small sub without cheese or dressing has 39 grams of carbohydrates, 1330 mg of sodium and is 370 calories. A large one still without cheese or dressing has 85 grams of carbs, 2750 mg of sodium and is 780 calories. Although I am more concerned about carbohydrates than sodium, that seems like a lot! (I left out cholesterol< which is 50 mg for the small, 100 for the large.)
It seems to me that particular Quizno fanchises have fewer choices of meats than the industry leader Subway.
I have eaten at Subway franchises many places (including in Spain), at Quizno's only in San Francisco, Jacksonville (FL), and Berkeley. From this limited sample, I will tentatively generalize that Quizno's employees are crankier and more attitude-giving than Subway ones.
I do think that the competition from Quizno's has had good effects on Subway -- a lot more than Avis has improved Hertz, to take another instance.
First, toasting subs -- the default at Quizno's -- led Subway to start offering to toast its subs. Second, there seems to be a price war at the moment, with both Subway footling sandwiches and Quizno's large (11" ones) selling for $5.
The first link of the chain was in Denver at 1275 Grant Street in a former Sinclair gas station in 1978 or 1981. The big-Q impinged on male national consciousness with an ad during the 2002 Super Bowl. Since then, Quizno's has received some bad publicity on both coasts.
In addition to submarine sandwiches and beverages, Quizno's also sells bread bowls and salads. Quizno's would not be on my list of places to go for a salad. (Fresh Choice, yeah!)
