Quizno's Subs - When Hamburgers and Fries Just Won't Do
Written: Oct 30 '01
Pros:Great toasted bread, good taste, fast preparation of sandwich
Cons:Pricey, typical restaurant has limited seating
The Bottom Line: A Fresh Respite from Boring Hamburgers, Fries, Chicken Wings and Hot Dogs - Try Quizno's!
Getting tired of the every day fanfare of McDonald's, Burger King, Carls Jr. and Arby's? I can't stand eating hamburgers every single day. My palate requires a mix of various types of foods available. So what does a hungry person do? Try Quizno's Subs.
I have been told Quizno's has been around for quite some time. However, this late bloomer didn't discover Quizno's until several months ago when a franchisee opened her store right down the street from my employer.
Although my employer has a cafeteria inside the premises, I couldn't stand their food. It was the same old boring thrown together quick service foods you get from catering trucks. My colleagues invited me out to lunch so I jumped at the chance to check out this new eatery down the street.

HOW YOUR SANDWICH IS PREPARED
This was the first time I observed submarine sandwich making via assembly line. Quizno's has three employees lined up. The first employee took your order then prepared the bread of your choice. The second employee prepares the meat portion of your sandwich and lays it out on your bread. Then pops it on a conveyor belt that rolls it into an oven. By the time you reach the registers, a third employee is ringing up your sale and directs you to the all-you-can-drink fountain.
THE TASTE TEST
Quizno's sandwiches aren't large in comparison to other submarine sandwich shops like Togos where some sandwiches are so huge you have to compress them to eat them!
On the particular day I visited Quizno's I tried The Traditional tender roast beef and real turkey breast sandwich. My pet peeve with many sandwich shops is that they add too much salt. Not at Quizno's! The flavor really didn't need additional salt to make the food taste great. Condiments such as mayonnaise and mustard were just right. My sandwich was very delicious. The turkey breast was not dry but moist.
If you are familiar with dry and stale buns, don't worry! Quizno's buns are perfect! Togo's do not warm or toast your bun but Quizno's does! It doesn't break up as you are eating it. It remains soft and chewy until the last bite!
CONDIMENTS
Like many sandwich shops you can request more or less of virtually any condiment they offer. The person making your sandwich will ask you what items you want and what items you do not want.
COMPARISON SHOPPING
I am very partial to Togos Restaurants because of their generous servings of meat and condiments you request. The cost for a large sized sub sandwich (Pastrami) at Togos is $4.99 compared to Quizno's at $5.39. Subway is $5.29.
Quizno's is on the expensive side. Our lunch that consisted of a regular sandwich and small drink cost $ 7.07. If you added a bag of chips, add another $1.29.
Quizno's large submarine sandwiches are HUGE. You better be hungry or you will never finish it.
QUIZNO'S RESTAURANT
The Quizno's restaurant I visited was located in the Irvine Spectrum in southern California. The Irvine Spectrum is commonly referred to as the Silicon Valley of southern California because of the high technology companies situated there. Eateries are far and few between so there isn't many place one can go to for lunch that is nearby.
When we got to Quizno's there were approximately fifteen people waiting in line to be assisted. The line meandered outside the restaurant which made entering and exiting the restaurant very difficult.
The only negative Quizno's received from me is the number of tables or sitting areas where customers can sit and eat at. Inside the restaurant there were four tables that sat four people per table. There were three tables outside the restaurant for more seating.
THE BOTTOM LINE
I recommend Quizno's. They are on the pricey side but their food is a good break from the daily grind of eating hamburgers and hot dogs every day.
When buying your lunch at Quizno's DON'T get the large sized soft drink! Quizno's provides FREE refills. I saw many people purchase large drinks. Medium drinks are $1.49. Large is $1.79. Save yourself .30 cents and just get a refill!
One final piece of advice, if you are watching your caloric or sodium intake, stay far away from Quizno's. Quizno's foods are very high in fat calories and sodium.
