Busy place on a Friday evening.
I’m probably not the one you would want to be reading a review by if you’re really into seafood. The only seafood I like is fish. Most fish anyway, don’t like salmon. Guess I wouldn’t make a good Grizzly bear!
I arrived at the restaurant (located on Maple Road in Amherst, New York) at about 6:00 pm. I had to wait to get a seat. Appeared that lot’s of other folks had made the same choice in restaurants that I had. Eventually the hostess seated me, handed me the menus and left me to the tender mercies of Amy.
Amy was my waitress. I think I lucked out here. Rarely does one ever find such a good waitress. Easygoing, courteous, efficient, and a radiant smile that put you instantly at ease. I’ve always felt that the service you get in a restaurant is as important as the quality of the food. I should comment on the nice atmosphere, equally at home for families, friends and romance. Unusual!
First thing Amy asked me was what I wanted to drink. She rattled off a few of their drink specials but since the only things I drink are water and on occasion some skim milk, I told her to bring me a big glass of icewater. She asked me if I would be interested in any appetizers but I declined stating that the (free) biscuits were all that I would desire.
Wonderful biscuits these. I could fill up on just these. Very moist with a buttery/cheesy flavor. May just be the best biscuits I’ve ever had! During this time, I noticed Amy and a bunch of her cohorts approaching a table across the room. They brought a cupcake and sang Happy Birthday to a very embarrassed lady. Have to smile at that!
By this time, I’d decided on a main course. I ordered the broiled haddock ($9.99). It came with salad and choice of potato. I don’t like salad (why do restaurants assume everyone eats salad? I mean, I’m not a rabbit, sheeeesh!), so I ordered a little rice pilaf to go with the Cheddar Mashed Potatoes and the Haddock.
I’ve eaten in Red Lobsters (including this one) before where the rice was so salty that I couldn’t eat it. Not this time however, it was just right. Must be a different chef. The mashed potatoes were very tasty as well. Usually mashed potatoes are kind of bland but these with some sort of cheddar cheese mixed in were most assuredly not bland.
The Haddock was also very good. I ate at a Red Lobster once while in Tennessee and the folks working there had never heard of Haddock before! I guess it’s not available in the south. I ended up ordering the Mahi Mahi there and it was good, tasted like chicken! A lot of fish (no matter how it is prepared) that is served in restaurants needs tartar sauce because it’s so dry, this was moist and delicious on it’s own.
Upon finishing my meal, Amy was there with her smiling face to ask me if I wanted any dessert. I said “are you kidding?” I didn’t have any room left for dessert even if I did want any!
Great food, great service! Except for the little wait to get a seat, I haven’t one thing to complain about. Thanks to Amy and whoever cooked my meal, I had a most pleasurable dining experience.
Based on this experience, I would give the place a 5 star rating, but some of the other times I was here weren’t quite as good. On the whole though it’s above average.
