| tracy9's Full Review: Saltgrass Steakhouse |
I am a steak person and I like to think that I know a good steak when I taste one. In that regard, Saltgrass has never let me down.
Within 5 minutes of my house, there are no less than seven steakhouses, at least one in every price range. And believe me, I've tried them all. But I always seem to come back to my old standby, Saltgrass. My family and I visit Saltgrass pretty regularly, about once or twice a month, and we are always very satisfied with the food.
I recommend the Center Cut Filet for dinner. It's always cooked to perfection (that's medium-rare for me), always juicy, always tender. Try the Garlic Mashed Potatoes and fresh vegetables with your steak. The potatoes are whipped and fluffy with just a hint of garlic and butter and the vegetables are typically what's in season so you're sure to get something fresh. If you happen to make it in before 4pm, you'll be lucky enough to try something from the lunch menu. The Tenderloin Tips are "to die for"! Super-tender tenderloin tips, smothered in mushroom gravy (with a hint of red wine?), all piled on top of a heaping of garlic mashed potatoes. My mouth is watering just thinking about it!
If you're really hungry, I highly recommend the Seafood Fondeaux appetizer-bits of seafood in a tasty cream sauce with toasted bread on the side. Of course, you also get a loaf of freshly made "beer" bread before your meal, and most meals come with a dinner salad (try the bleu cheese dressing!), so you can become quite full before you even get your steak! No problem. Take your leftover steak home-it's even better the next day.
There have only been two occasions when the service was a little slow and both of those were during peak times. We rarely have to wait for a table, even on weekend evenings. And I've found our waiters/waitresses to be friendly, knowledgable and accomodating. They always ask if we've ever been to Saltgrass before, and, if we happen to be with someone who hasn't been there before, many times the manager will visit our table after the meal and ask if everything was alright and sometimes even give us free appetizer certificates or just comp the appetizer we ordered.
While prices are not cheap (four people could easily spend $100 there), they are certainly not outrageous either. My philosophy is that if you're going to spend money going out for steak, why not spend a few dollars more for a really good one.
My only complaint about the restaurant is the facility itself. The bar area is adjacent to the dining area with nothing more than a short wall dividing the two. For non-smokers, people with allergies, or families with children this can become a problem. During really busy times, the smoke and noise from the bar permeate every area of the restaurant, which can really ruin your appetite.
Overall, I've always been pleased with Saltgrass Steakhouse. The food is wonderful and if you time your visit well, even the open design of the bar and dining area can be tolerated.
