Pros:Good burgers, good prices, variety
Cons:Where's the ketchup?
The Bottom Line: If you don't like ketchup, it's a fabulous place to eat!
When I want a burger, I like to go to Sonic. I would say Sonic is a step above most other fast food restaurants.
The Drive-In
Sonic is modeled after the drive-ins of the 50s and 60s with music from that period always playing in the background. You pull into one of many bays with a full menu board on your left. You don’t have to feel rushed to order. Once you have decided what you want, just push the button on the menu to call a server. In just a few minutes, the server will bring your order on a tray to be placed on your driver-side window. Once you have finished, there is a small shelf under the menu to leave your trash. That doesn’t mean you should clean your car out. It is just for empty sonic bags and cups.
More than Burgers
They have good burgers. The #1 burger comes with mayonnaise, and all the fixings. The #2 burger comes the same way, only they replace the mayo with mustard. You can pick from a few other burgers, but I’m not that brave. Most burgers come available in a combo. If you buy a burger, fries, and a drink, you can save about $1.00 on your order. Unlike most other fast food restaurants, they also have chicken sandwiches, chicken fingers, corn dogs, hot dogs, onion rings, and tater tots. The hot dogs (coneys), fries, and tater tots can be ordered with chili and/or cheese. In addition to these items, you can also get mozzarella sticks and cheddar peppers. These come with a packet of marinara sauce, which is not the greatest, but it’s cheap. The food is good, but it’s very greasy. In fact, I avoid the fries here because they are usually dripping with grease.
Sweet Stuff
The entire back side of the menu is dedicated to the sweet stuff. You can see the back of the menu on the right side of your car. You can choose from many desserts such as the banana split, hot fudge cake, and many different sundaes. They also have a wide variety of sweet drinks. They have shakes, slushes, and flurries. I personally like the flurries. They aren’t quite as thick as a milkshake, but not as thin as a slush. You can get your basic flavors; vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry. You can also get other flavors such as peanut butter, chocolate chip, and my favorite, pina colada. I find myself going to Sonic at least 2 times a week to get a flurry. I’ve noticed that the flavors can vary somewhat from restaurant to restaurant, but most are pretty consistent.
Eating
One of things that I dislike about sonic is that you have to eat in the car. It’s just not comfortable to eat a meal in the car, and it’s extremely hard when you have a 20-month-old toddler in a car sear in the back. Many locations have a few tables set up outside, but during the warmer months, they’re usually full. I prefer to get the food to go. Some of the restaurants now have a drive-thru which makes it easier when you’re on the run.
Service
I’ve always had good service at Sonic. The food is delivered to the car within minutes of ordering. The only problem I’ve had with the service is getting ketchup. For some reason, they don’t put ketchup in the bag, and the servers usually don’t carry any. I started ordering ketchup when I ordered the meal, but that didn’t even work! One time I asked for ketchup, and the server said she’d bring some right out. After several minutes passed, I had to call again to request it. It’s such a hassle, I’m thinking of taking my own.
Overall
If you want fast food, but need a little variety, Sonic is the place to go. It’s also a great place to stop in for dessert or a drink to cool you off. Just don’t go looking for health food, because it’s a bit greasy.
