Cons: Too thick shakes&burgers, so many staff that they are bumping into each other
The Bottom Line: Even though I love the diner motif and atmosphere, the food leaves something to be desired

Shhh, if you will not tell...I will tell you my dark secret about Steak 'n Shake. I was a mystery shopper at our local Steak 'n Shake for years! Bad for them but free food for our family! Bad for them because I did not care for this restaurant at all! I loved the atmosphere of an ol' timey diner with bright colors but the food and the restaurant itself...not so much.
Customer service:
This place is practically crawling with staff. I could not walk down the aisles without ducking past three staff members flying past me. Sheesh. Fast customer service sure but dang do they really need that many people on the floor? Their uniforms were always clean and impeccable. Cheerful staff seem overly so to me. Very fake. One problem that I had was getting receipts for my order, I needed this to be reimbursed for the mystery shopping. I ended up having to ask for management once to get a dern receipt!! I felt rushed giving my order inside a number of times as if they are so quick to get customers' orders that they rush the order taking process! No chance to decide on what I wanted and I had better know coming in what I wanted to eat! Drive through staff was also quick to get the orders to us. Very efficient and fast! Staff were quick to come back to the table and ask if we wanted drink refills or dessert.
Inside of the restaurant:
Shiny clean with a diner motif. The parking lot was lit up with bright lights. Plenty of parking spaces and easy access to the entrance. Large restaurant with many booths. Crowded most of the time but plenty of seating to go around. Open 24 hours inside and out. Large aisles between the booths make it seem huge! The spotless clean bathrooms are large with extra stalls.
The food:
I do not care for the burgers here as they are just too thick. Their ad claims that their burgers are "steakburgers" but they are really thick beef patties. The shakes are hand dipped and very thick! Thick enough to eat with a spoon. The shakes come with a ladyfinger cookie and a cherry on the top. A large glass is used for the shakes. I will give you a hint with the shakes...use your spoon for dipping! They offer double flavored milk shakes and root beer floats. Various offerings of burgers include a Triple Steakburger. Other dinner menu items are chili served three ways, many types of salads, chicken and club sandwiches, various soups, french fries, baked beans, cottage cheese, and others. Desserts include brownie fudge sundae, parfaits, and cobblers. The kids' menu offers smaller steakburgers, grilled cheese, chicken fingers, and more. There are not many breakfast items but these include smoothies, bagel sandwiches, eggs, pancakes, and others.
The drinks:
You have many options here for drinks: colas, juices, coffee, shakes, hot tea, hot chocolate, milk, and cold tea. The shake flavor is a let down for the wonderful presentation. Little taste in any of the milk shakes that I have tried at Steak 'N Shake! What a bummer! Looks delicious and tastes so-so. Pitiful!
This has never been on my top ten of restaurants. Even though I love the diner motif and atmosphere, the food leaves something to be desired! I did not care for the thick burgers not the thick milk shakes that cannot be sucked through a straw! If I wanted ice cream, I would order ice cream! I would not recommend this restaurant for the pretty but not-so-tasty food.
