Pros: Good bread, fair prices.
Cons: Some are dirty, questionable food handling
The Bottom Line: Although a franchise, Subways vary a lot. If it looks clean give it a shot. Stay away from the dirty stores.

I worked at a Subway for a year in college. I guess the best question is "Would I eat at Subway?". Well not trying to talk in circles, it would depend on the individual store. Being a franchise, Subway tries to maintain standards by having compliance agents and approved vendor lists. The goal is to have each Subway not differ in appearance or food. I have been in several Subways and like I said I worked in one. The subway I worked at, is what I would consider average. We were not spotless, but we were not dirty. I know I washed my hands thousands of times while working there. When we got busy we would put one person on the register and two people would make sandwiches. This was for both health and efficiency. The most dangerous thing I ever noticed was meat sat out sometimes. Subway buys their meat pre-sliced. The store then pre-makes the sandwich set up on wax paper. Sometimes when we got real busy we would leave the meat out on a counter for a half hour or so. Generally we were safe and clean, but there are a lot of things that could be unsafe in a Subway. That is why if a store looks dirty, their standards for safe handling of food is most likely low as well. If you go in a Subway and it is dirty, leave. Complain to the manager or the company directly. If a store gets enough complaints they will have to clean up their act or lose the franchise. Well Subway sandwiches range in price from $3-$8. The veggie sub is the cheapest and the roast beef or steak subs are the most expensive. Stay away from the cold cut combo. It is the least healthy and has the worst meat on it. I would stick with a turkey or roast beef sub. The ham is not bad either. A turkey sub with no cheese and light dressing can be a fast healthy meal. The bread is what makes a Subway sandwich. It is made from frozen sticks which are proofed and then baked. It is usually fresh, again it varies from store to store. Subway is a good alternative to fast food. It is healthier than burgers and most are clean. I would recommend Subway to anybody who enjoys sandwiches. Again, if it looks dirty or dark avoid it. I would recommend that Subway start to slice their own meats with each order. I think it would make a better sandwich and be cleaner. I still eat at Subway, even after eating there several times a week.
