I'd just gotten out of my late afternoon meeting and was on my way to an evening meeting about 20 minutes away. I didn't have time to go home or go to a real restaurant, so fast food would have to do. I really didn't want the grease and kiddy atmosphere of McDonald's or its ilk and wasn't in the mood for the Colonel.
Best choice for the day--Subway. They were running a buy one get one free if it rains and you buy a drink special and it was raining (a rarity here in SoCal).
Let's first go into what Subway isn't.
Subway is not haute cuisine. It is not the place to go for the best, most memorable sandwich you will ever experience. It isn't the place for the biggest, tastiest sandwich on the planet. It is not truly a health food outfit, though they do have several low fat items.
While not any of the above, Subway is a good place to get a reliable, tasty sandwich in a hurry at a good price. My order of a six inch meatball sandwich, a drink, and an extra sandwich to take home cost $4.98, including tax. I consider that quite reasonable.
Besides meatballs, subway has the standard offerings of various deli and other types of meat. They have a variety of breads which they bake on site. You can also order chips, drinks, and cookies. They have a standard decor of an old-fashioned New York subway map and pictures on the wall which is the same in every Subway I have ever been in.
The employees--usually the type you would expect to find in a fast food--make the sandwiches while you are waiting. They have a number of toppings you can include on request (cheese, lettuce, onion, pickles, green peppers, olives, etc.). I find the employees reasonably courteous, though often you have to tell them more than once what you want.
At least in my area, Subway often runs coupons and specials. Often I see coupons on the back of grocery receipts. Now they are running the rainy day specials I mentioned earlier.
Yes, some of their commercials can get kind of obnoxious. Fortunately, they don't play them in the restaurants.
Is Subway someplace I would go for a dining occasion or to get the best sandwich or deli I can find? No. I'd go to a locally owned non-chain outfit for that. Locally, I might go to Claro's for Italian or Billy's for Jewish.
My four-star rating does not indicate that I consider Subway a fine dining experience. It does indicate that I think they do what they do well. They provide a tasty sandwich reasonably quickly in a clean atmosphere for times when I am in a hurry. I don't ask anything more than that from them.
