The Bottom Line: Convenient, inexpensive and tasty. If tortillaboy eats here, why wouldn't you?

If you have ever been to a Taco Cabana in Houston, you quite likely have seen a green Nissan Pick-Up with "WWW.TORTILLABOY.COM" skrawled across the tailgate, sitting in line at the drive-thru. People laugh when I tell them how often I eat at one of the five Taco Cabanas in my typical driving area. Let's simply say that on more than one occasion I have eaten all 3 squares here, or maybe I should say "rounds"...hehe.
Taco Cabana has been in Houston for many years, and was even copied in design by the now defunct "Two Pesos". They offer a wide range of Tex-Mex delights and are open 24-hours via the drive-thru. They offer a small but good assortment of beers and margaritas made with real tequila (not in the drive-thru though...and no I didn't try). The restaurants include an inside dining area as well as a patio. Each Taco Cabana has a slightly different look to their patio, but there is always the trademark pink.

The Cabana Bowl
The current special offering is the Cabana Bowl which is made of beans, rice, cheese, tomatoes, sour cream, guacamole, and either chicken(shredded or grilled) or beef(ground or grilled) all put inside one of those taco salad edible tortilla bowl thingies. 2.99 or 3.99(grilled meat)
Taco Combo
2.99 will get you two crispy tacos (beef or chicken), some chips and queso and a medium drink. For 3.99 you can up grade and get fajita tacos instead...I totally recommend this upgrade.

I would simply like to touch on my favorites since the menu is rather long.
Fajita Tacos - Fresh warm soft flour tortillas wrapped around tasty grilled beef or chicken strips. Just how it supposed to be done.
Quesadillas - Cheese, chicken (or beef), and cilantro between two large fresh flour tortillas toasted slightly crispy. Served with sour cream and guacamole. mmmm
Bean & Cheese Burrito - One of the simple pleasures in life. At 1.99 this monster simply contains refried beans and shredded cheddar cheese wrapped in a large flour tortilla. (had one of these today)
Fajita Nachos - A large portion of yellow and red corn tortilla chips smothered with melted queso (cheese) with pico de gallo mixed in. Topped with beef or chicken fajita meat cut into small pieces. This one isn't as good in the drive-thru so save it for when you dine-in.
Margaritas - They make frozen margaritas, either lime or strawberry. Sure you could go to Papasito's and pay $5.00 but I'd prefer these at 2 bucks. In case my boss reads this...I've never had them at lunch...honest. :^)
Eggs Mexicana Combo - My breakfast regular for dine-in. Two scrambled eggs with pico de gallo, queso, refried beans, three strips of bacon, and 2 flour tortillas.
The combo includes coffee, juice, or med drink.
Breakfast Tacos - Ahhh the morning is never better than starting it with a couple or bacon, egg and cheese tacos, or sometimes the greasy barbacoa tacos. mmmm Sometimes vendor bring these to our office to shmooze with us...boy, they sure know my language.

DECOR
~~~~~
The trademark pink stucco buildings can be seen from a good distance. Hedges surround the patio that have colorful umbrellas on round tables. Many TC's have a fountain on the patio too. Walk up and order, wait to hear your number called, then visit the cool salsa bar which lets you choose from about 5 different hot sauces, pico de gallo, cilantro, onions, jalapenos, and more so that you can spice up your meal.
WHY NOT 5 STARS?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Only two things stand out as flaws in this wonderful establishment. One is the flavorless ground beef. I typically opt for the fajita beef on the dishes I order. The second thing is the tortillas. Don't get me wrong, I think they taste great and will definitely not stop eating them, but I prefer my tortillas toasted a little. Sometimes TC's torts can be a little too soggy or flimsy.
SERVICE
~~~~~~~
What can I say?...I love being served by the pretty little "mamasitas" that work here. ;^) Sure, some of them don't know English very well, but I have yet to have a bad experience at a Taco Cabana. Most are nice and friendly. Great people. Ok, if I had to point one thing out, it is that sometimes when they are busy, the tables don't get cleaned fast enough.
I recommend trying this inexpensive Tex-Mex delight. It may not be the absolute best in town, but they sure do a great job.
:^)
