| edgeman's Full Review: Tim Hortons |
Tim Hortons is the most popular donut/coffee place in Canada. The U.S. has Krispy Kreme (which we are starting to get) and we have Tim Hortons (which the U.S. is starting to get). I think Tim Hortons will eventually win the battle between the two because I've never seen anything more than donuts come out of Krispy Kreme, while Tim Hortons has coffee (that I hear is quite good) and many other types of food.
Writing this review will be hard for me because I once worked there. I will try to keep it fair but will include some details of what an employee goes through for anyone considering a job there. I will quickly tell everyone who doesn't know that Tim Horton was a hockey player on the Toronto Maple Leafs NHL team many decades ago. He decided to open a donut store.
Tim Hortons are every where you look in Canada and are probably considered the nations national restaurant. And there is good reason for that, they make great stuff! The coffee is usually fresh (depending on how busy it is and the focus of the staff) and is a favorite of coffee drinkers in the mall I worked at who didn't want fancy coffee. The coffee comes in regular and decaffeinated, regular is the favorite of most customers. I tried it once and spit it out as soon as it went in my mouth. I guess liking coffee comes with age, an age I have yet to arrive at.
The donut selection is incredible! That have many different flavours that all taste great! There are also smaller golf ball sized and shaped donuts called Tim Bits. In addition to donuts they also sell muffins (normal and fat free), croissants (butter, cheese, and chocolate), danishes (cherry, blueberry, and lemon when I worked there), cookies (but they weren't sold at the store I worked at), and many other tasty treats that don't come to mind right now.
Drinks include coffee, tea (many different flavors), Tim Hortons bottled water (abberfoyle water with a Tim Horton's label), juice (apple, orange, and fruit punch that come in glass bottles and are hard to break, trust me), pop/soda, milk (white and chocolate), capuccino's (French vanilla and English toffee), ice capuccino's, and hot chocolate. Sorry about that run on sentence. I like all those drinks except for the coffee, the capuccino's are ok.
Here's some information for people who are thinking about applying for a job at Tim Hortons. They accept applications that can be picked up from the stores. This saves having to write a resume. I uniform's are not comfortable at all! I was given girls pants because they had no guy ones, so they were much tighter than I'm used to. You'll need to wash the uniform regularly because it'll start to stink like coffee after a few shifts. At the time I worked there I was 14. Because of this I was screwed in the department of payment. I was paid $6.40 CDN which is less than minimum wage. That was a major reason why I left. I heard that once you're 16 you make minimum wage, but I'm not completely sure about that. Another bad thing was, I didn't get any training. I was told to study the cash register for 5 minutes, then I was sent out to work. I didn't even get that uniform until after the first week!
How good the job is depends on where the store is. In my case, it was in my city's biggest mall (which isn't that big, but still, it's where everyone goes). So there were always line ups. At Christmas time, people were lined up two restaurants down from us! It's insane at that time. For that reason I recommend working at a store separate from a mall. Especially because customers get cranky at Christmas, and that can really test your patience!
The customers were another reason I left. I never realized how some people can be until I was on the other side of the counter. Everyone thinks that the job is really easy, and although it isn't overly complicated, it can be hard. Standing there giving people coffee for 8 hours straight can really drain you and it takes one annoying customer to ruin the rest of your shift. I had a lot of those customers along with some really nice ones, but the bad outweighed the good. I know it may seem like I'm whining about this, but you get a job there and see for yourself.
One big problem with Tim Hortons (maybe it was just the one I worked at, but I don't know) is that at the end of the day, they throw out all the left over food. I know that may not sound like a big deal, but I'm sure it could be put to better use. I know it's only fresh enough to sell for so long, but day old donuts aren't bad, especially for people who need food.
So in conclusion, eat there, don't work there. The food's great, but once you work there and eat the food every day, you get sick of it and it ruins the enjoyment you will initially get from eating there.
