| pkmom's Full Review: Waffle House |
The Waffle House is as much a Southern staples as grits. There is a language and flow here all it's own. You'll offten find these unpretentious little restaurants by interstate dotting the landscape.
Forget the linens. Dinner napkins are these little folded up paper things pulled out of stainless steel containers.
Step in, and you're immediately thrown back to diners found in the 50's or 60's. When you walk in there is a lunch counter with a row of stools, on the right or left of this are the booths "For 2 or more people please". One end of the restaurant is usually smoking with the non-smoking section located at the opposite end.
It's very much a "what you see is what you get" kind of place.
The staff is friendly, or not, but is always "down home".
Patrons include utility workers, doctors, convenient store clerks, bankers in a hurry to get back to work or kids in prom attire seeking a midnight meal.
Like everything, breakfast is served 24 hours a day, fixed hot, fresh and right in front of you. The ambience is nonexistent. Background music changes according to who is buying at the jukebox. If you don't like what's on when you come in give it a minute and it will change - or slide a dollar in and wait your chance.
When you eat here, there are a few basic things you need to know:
A "Plain" Burger is "Hold the Garden"
Hashbrowns with onions and cheese are "Scattered, smothered and covered"
Adding ham to your hashbrowns? That's "chunked".
Want chili on something? Make it "topped".
Sharing a waffle? Order it "Out like 2".
And yes, breakfast meals often include "Grits". You add to those either butter, salt and pepper OR butter and sugar. It is also acceptable to order cheese on your grits but you do not add all of the above to the same order of grits.
When you order tea it will be served sweet and over ice. Possibly it will be unsweetened and over ice. If you are a Yankee and you like it hot and unsweetened you'd better speak up and say so when you order.
Coffee is hot and thick. For the faint of heart there is also "decaf".
Coke products are served here. Luckily, for those who want something else water is also available.
It's reasonably priced too!
A breakfast meal for two consisting of 2 ham and cheese omlettes with the hashbrowns scattered and covered runs about $13.00.
Don't go here if you are looking for a quaint, quiet little restaurant.
But, if you are looking for good food, fast at a minimum price go on in. Have a seat at the counter. Order it "scattered, smothered and covered" and have fun!
