To me, nobody beats a Wendy's burger. They're usually hot, fresh off the grill and taste great. Wendy's is the only restaurant I know that serves square patties on a round bun. Maybe that adds to the flavor? Who knows?
I like my burgers without onions. Onions make me ill. We do not get along. I will double check at the window when paying. Usually, this catches it if they order-taker forgot to mention it to the cooking crew. Not so at this Wendy's. A two by four might work but even that's doubtful.
On this particular day I had run late to meetings all day. All I wanted to do was pick up a late dinner and get to my office. I didn't feel like playing games with the drive-thru staff but that's exactly what happened.
I ordered a single with cheese, no onions. The side item in the combo was french fries and I asked for a medium diet coke. It shouldn't have been too hard.
The first red flag came when the girl told me to drive to the window without giving me the total. When I got there she stuck her head out the window and asked "What was that again?"
So, I repeated the order and asked for the sandwich to have no onions, a diet coke and french fries.
The total was about $6. Ok, no problem. I got the money out and gave it to her. She handed me the drink and said it would be a minute on the order. I did manage to ask for and receive a straw right before she shut the window. You can't be too fast with these things.
Much to my surprise the drink tasted funny. In fact, it tasted remarkably like Dr. Pepper. I tried to signal the server. She seemed a little annoyed that I interrupted her conversation but she did finally come to the window anyway. She told me I was waiting on french fries. I explained about my drink and reminded her about the onions. She switched it out and went back to the conversation.
In a few minutes she appeared and handed me a bag. Before I could ask about the onions she quickly she closed the window. I checked the bag and noticed an immediate odor and no napkins. The fries were piping hot though. I took those out of the bag to munch on while they fixed the sandwich.
She didn't want to come back to the window but she did. I asked for a manager. It took a minute but she was very nice when she got there. I explained about the problem. She was apologetic and said they would fix it. I told her if it was easier they could just make the burger plain. She said that would be fine and she would be back in just a few minutes.
True to her word she was back quickly with burger and fresh fries in tow. I didn't want the fries but it was a nice gesture. However, when I took the sandwich out of the bag I again noticed a strange odor. Instead of making the burger plain they put everything on it.
This time, the drive-thru worker didn't even come to the window. She sent the manager. The manager was a little dumbfounded at the sandwich. She was very apologetic and said she'd be right back. I asked if there were any sandwiches that did not come with onions. She said yes and suggested the chicken sandwich. I told her that would be fine.
In a few minutes she was back again. She had another sandwich, fresh french fries and a new drink. She also gave me my money back. She promised me that the sandwich had no onions on it and was very apologetic.
By this time I needed to be back at work so I thanked her and drove off. If the sandwich wasn't right I had enough of my fill on french fries that I could make a meal off of those.
Then I reached into the bag expecting a chicken sandwich and pulled out a Wendy's single with cheese. No onions. Plain. My fresh drink was a Dr. Pepper.
Next time I ordered from Wendy's I drove to a different store.
