Seventh Generation Free & Clear: Finally A Cleaner That Doesn't Make Me Gag!

Written: Aug 1, 2012
Rated a Very Helpful Review by the Epinions community
Pros:No chemical smells, nice trigger, decent cleaner.
Cons:You do need to use some elbow grease on larger messes.
The Bottom Line: If you hate cleaners that are overly scented or smell industrial, give this free and clear version a try.

I used to love having different scents in my home; I was a candle freak and loved dark musk scents. That changed after a botched intubation that left me with jacked up vocal chords. Not once, but twice. Now even the slightest lightest scent makes me gag. You might think that is an exaggeration but it isn't. You should see me when I have to take public transportation and someone decides to shower in cologne or perfume. Knowing that scents bother me, I started switching almost all cleaning products over to free and clear formulas. The problem there is trying to find something that is actually going to work. Having mostly good luck with Seventh Generation products in the past I gave their all purpose cleaner a try. As far as power goes, it isn't as strong as Fantastik but it is close. For greasy counters and the stovetop this works great. I wasn't impressed with how it tackled some of the outside things that needed to be cleaned on the patio but for lighter dirt on patio chairs and tables it works well even if you end up squirting them down with the hose.

This works great on most dirt but for mold or anything shower related, you are probably going to be disappointed. I've given up trying to clean the shower curtain of mold and whatever else starts growing on it and just buy a new one every three months. I got rid of all of the harsh cleaners in the basement including the bleach; I can smell that from two floors away and it really irritates my chest and throat. This doesn't work as well as bleach but it does work; for the shower walls you need to apply it wet and let it sit for a couple minutes. There are going to be spots that are going to need some scrubbing but that's the case with almost all cleaners.

For the kitchen this is great for the counters and in the sink; it's not something that I would use on glass because it does have some streak to it even if you are using a lint free cloth. Right now I am using another free and clear window cleaner that works but it isn't all that impressive. I am not using this stuff to be eco-friendly but I have to say that I do feel better buying this than some of the other things that I've used in the past. Seventh Generation markets this as being biodegradable, non-toxic and hypoallergenic. I look at it this way, it doesn't make me sneeze, cough or gag so it's something that I'll stick with until I find a free and clear product that works better. Why this needs to be certified kosher is beyond me.

The trigger action is decent but you aren't going to be able to get to higher up areas to spray. I like that I don't have to worry about it burning my skin or making me choke when I am using it and even though there are some things that it can't clean perfectly I would recommend this to people who are looking for a free and clear solution for basic cleaning. The cost isn't bad, about four dollars a bottle so it is comparable to other spray bottle products that are multi surface. I am hesitant to try some of the other Seventh Generation cleaners because they are not listed on the bottles as being 'free and clear'. I have no idea if my sensitivity to scents is to pass over time but as it stands even the smell of Axe body spray or deodorant from across the room makes me gag. The only surface that they do not recommend this for is wood floors; I'd never use something like this on them because of the possibility of a haze being left behind but I am sure there are people that don't bother to read the warnings.
