Pros:Great sounding; extra ear cushions; stylish design
Cons:So small! Big headed people beware!
The Bottom Line: If you have a small to average sized head you will love the sounds that come from these headphones!
I was not really in the market for a new set of headphones but when I saw these go on sale at a local retailer I thought these warranted at least a decent listen.
Being a beginner to the closed headphone design I came into this review with an clean slate. My favorite set of headphones to date were a set of Sennheiser PX100 on ear style headphone. My personal taste in music is geared towards the bass side of the frequency spectrum. I figured that getting that kind of sound out of a set of headphones was not going to be possible. Boy was I wrong.
I opened the package and was very surprised at what I found. Shure had included not only a carrying case for the headphones but an extra set of ear cushions as well. Prior to this I did not know that was even possible. An added bonus for sure. One other unique feature this set of headphones has is a removable 9 foot coiled cord. The cord utilizes an insert and twist to lock design that seemed to work well. The only downside to this is that the cord exits the headphones in the straight down position which for me kept rubbing against my shoulder. One of the flaws of the design in my opinion.
Prior to listening I plugged these headphones into my computer and let my iTunes playlist run on a moderate volume for 15 hours straight. I know break in is a disputable topic, I just felt it was best to err on the side of caution in this case.
When I first put the headphones on, the first BIG problem I noticed was just how small of a set these are. I have a large head. I had to fully extend the headband to even come close to fitting correctly. I don't know why Shure would make these so small! At maximum extension I have to wiggle them around to get a proper seal. A problem that could have been averted by making them slightly larger in my opinion. BIG mistake.
Once I was able to get past the fit and actually get down to the musicality of them, I was really shocked! Tonally these headphones are very well rounded. The Highs and midrange are very very nice and offer a bit of a warm sound to them. The bass was a little lack luster. But knowing these were a "DJ" set of headphones I would reserve judgement on that until I gave them a little more power. I also noticed that because of the akward fitment that the sound would bleed out of these headphones. Almost to the point where it defeats the purpose of having closed headphones at all.
My next test was to plug these into my Home Theatre receiver using the supplied 1/8" to 1/4" jack adapter. I noticed immediately that the sound was a bit different. The low end of these headphones had suddenly come alive! Now these are stated to be able to handle more powerful applications such as a DJ's mix table. So I cant say that I was shocked at this result. I played various music track and even watched Transformers 3 through these headphones and the low end was so present that several time I had to grab them because I could actually feel my ears moving and vibrating inside. Such a new experience.
So in review, I really liked the sound and look of these headphones. But the fit is so bad that I just can not keep them as i just wont wear them. Such a shame!
