Pros:Fun gameplay, good graphics, good sound
Cons:Lame story
The Bottom Line: I recommend this game to all Sonic fans and to new players because it is a very unique game that is among the best Sega has released in recent years.
For all long-time Sonic lovers, do not hesitate to play this game. Though a little flawed, this game is a nostalgic treat.
Story: Not particularly interesting. Essentially, time has been messed up by some unknown villian, and past and present Sonic must go through a series of classic sonic levels and defeat several bosses in order to get the oppurtunity to defeat it. All of this occurs in a weird dimension called "white space" where current and classic Sonic meet each other.
Gameplay: There are essentially two types of gameplay. The first is found in "classic" Sonic's levels. These contain a traditional 3-D, side-scrolling style of gameplay traditionally found in the early sonic games. This style features a very basic control scheme (A to jump, X to spin dash, move analog stick right to move). The other style of gameplay is found in current Sonic's levels. These are 3-D-style levels that feature a similar control scheme found in Sonic games released in the past ten years or so ( A to jumb, X to attack, move analog stick forward to move). The 3-D levels are somewhat more difficult than the 2-D levels, generally.
Graphics: I had no problems with the graphics. Most visuals were very impressive, especially ones found in levels from traditional Sonic games. These levels had to be reimagined, if you will, and the finished job for these is just great. However, some of the levels from newer Sonic games look almost the same as they did in their respective games. That said, I can appreciate the fact that levels from newer games are harder to update graphically because graphic technology has not advanced enough to really make these levels seem new. Some framerate and pop-up issues exist, but do not seriously affect gameplay.
Sound: Everything seems to be in order with the music, the sound effects, and, most importantly, the voice acting. I enjoyed the soundtrack because it featured tasteful remixes of tunes heard in previous Sonic games in their respective levels. This adds to the nostalgic value of the game. Sound effects are equally impressive; they are all appropriate and never annoying. Voice acting has always been an issue with sonic games, but this game's voice actors actually left me with a good impression. All the characters seemed to have voices that superbly fit their personalities and I applaud Sega for doing such a surprisingly excellent job in finding good voice actors.
Overall: I'm going to say that this game is probably the best Sonic game to come on the market since Sonic Adventure 2, which was released over ten years ago. Not only is it fun for new players, but it holds an incredible nostalgic value that no long-time Sonic player should miss.
