Great movie!

Jan 25, 2001 (Updated Jan 25, 2001)

Rated a Very Helpful Review

Pros:Very entertaining - like Alien, The Abyss, and 2001 all together in one movie

Cons:Some actors didn't fit in well

The Bottom Line: Very entertaining in a 2001, Abyss, and Alien way.

My name is Jerry...no, wait, its Harry...

I absolutely loved this movie, not because it was supposed to be creepy and scary, but because it was just so hilarious watching the actors trying to be scary. I admit that Samuel L. Jackson did a good job of making people think he was a bit freakish, but Dustin Hoffman just doesn't quite fit in (he will always be remembered for his role in Rainman, and he has some very Rainman-like scenes in the movie). Sharon Stone is just too old and past her prime to be really effective, and Liev Schreiber is just a big clumsy freak! Also, Queen Latifah doesn't make for a very believable naval officer.

Despite the poor casting job, I thought the story was excellent. I wished, however, that the movie explained more about the alien (or American???) spacecraft. Who was that skeleton sitting in that chair? And exactly what year did the ship come from (it couldn't be 2043, there is no way we could develop that kind of technology so fast). The "unexplained event" diary entry was definitely the coolest scene in the movie.

The Sphere itself was rather bland looking, I thought. I wished they had made it silver colored instead of gold. I still don't understand why they made Samuel L. Jackson look all mean looking went he went "inside". When Dustin goes "inside", he looks normal.

My favorite scene in the movie was when Dustin starts brushing his teeth in the compound after he and Sharon Stone inject Samuel Jackson with the needle. The sink makes a strange noise, and then Dustin looks underneath, supposedly while thinking about snakes coming out of the sink (reminds me of the time when my roommate left a Ramen noodle in the drain of the bathroom sink - ack, parasites!?!). When the snakes start to attack Dustin, he screams "Get it off of me, get it off!" in a funny, high pitched voice. It was like a Rainman mental fit or something.

Another funny Dustin Hoffman scene was when Jerry told Dustin to stop calling him Jerry. Dustin then says "Jerry, what do you want me to call you, Jerry. Jerry....". Didn't Jerry just say that his name wasn't Jerry? The "Use your words, Jerry" line was a classic.

The end of the movie was brilliant. By forgetting the fact that the Sphere ever existed, everything is solved. The mini-sub "vertigo" scene was a bit over-done, however. It was just total mass confusion for like 10 minutes and then Dustin saying "No, you won't die here, and I wont die here", and then he pushes the red button.

The special effects were great, but some sub scenes were too fake looking. The made-up creatures were even better. I loved that snake/fish-like creature with teeth that attacks Dustin outside the compound (at first I thought it was going for his dick). The captain being sliced in half by the door wasn't very believable and was actually a very crude killing. One thing I don't understand is why everyone had PhD's from MIT. It is a good school, but not all scholarly people went there.

Well, to sum everything up, I thought the movie was really good and well worth the time spent watching it. It was like a bit of Alien, The Abyss, and 2001 all mixed together in one movie. So, if you liked any of those movies, you will really like Sphere.
