| TMJTWILSON's Full Review: America West Arena |
This is one of the greatest places to enjoy a basketball game - especially if the Phoenix Suns are on the court! The AWA is fabulous, from it's intense purple decor, to the incredible sound system blaring all kinds of pump it up music, to the clean and abundant restrooms. It is really easy to get around inside and outside. The seating is snug toward the top, but most of the fans are very nice. The security staff is always helpful. The Suns owner, Jerry Colangelo, encourages a family atmosphere and while having a good time is the order of the day, being obnoxious is definitely frowned upon. So go ahead and bring the kids (as long as they are not criers). Adults whiners also discouraged.
The food is too costly for what they offer. (AWA's neighbor, Bank One Ballpark, has much better quality and selection.) The drinks are pretty steep, too. But, you get a whole lot of entertainment for the price of a ticket including the famous Gorilla, the Phoenix Suns dance team, some sort of competition or performance at half time, and the pleasure of being in a pristine arena. The maintenance staff keeps the place sparkling. Nothing is ever broken or dirty. Every time I go, it seems brand new. There are great views of the court from all seats and if you need a closer look, there are many huge tv screens to watch.
Shopping is also great with several Team Shops scattered about at all the exits and a few kiosks here and there. Something cool is always available to buy and at decent prices.
Parking around the downtown Phoenix area has really expanded ever since the new arena was built and it couldn't be easier to find a spot.
One of the greatest features of AWA is the mall on the northwest corner, at the main entrance. It is huge and there is frequently a band playing before the games. There are lots of musicians strolling around the downtown area before, during and after games from saxaphonists to horn players. Many of the local restaurants keep hours that compliment game times and there's plenty of delicious fare to choose from.
I love going to AWA. Mostly, to see my favorite NBA team in action, but also because it has an explosive atmosphere. I've also been to a few hockey games at AWA and I had great seats for those events, too. Interestingly enough, the crowd is different and the atmosphere is more subdued during the hockey games. But it is still a whole bunch of fun.
