Two days in Phoenix, and Monet was in town. What better way to limber up for an art exhibition than to watch ten grown men mash each other's faces against perspex screens?
This was our first NHL game, and we just weren't prepared for the glossy entertainment about to unfold before us. We took our seats twenty minutes before the game, and the icy blast down the tunnels added to the excitement. The place wasn't exactly packed, so we expected a poor atmosphere for this midweek game. After all, with eighty-odd games a season, surely the Coyote fans couldn't produce an electric atmosphere every night?
Back home in the UK, we were regular supporters of Ipswich Town football club. With football (or Soccer!), what you pay for is exactly what it says on the tin - two 45 minute halves of football, nothing more, nothing less. You sit freezing in the wind and rain, knowing the odds are your team might not even score a goal. The half time entertainment usually amounts to a bit of music played over the tannoy, and if you're really lucky, a penalty shoot out.
Things used to be a bit different when Satellite first picked up the football. Every time the Sky Sports carnival rolled into town, we were treated to the works - cheerleaders, parachutists, fireworks, balloons, giant sumo wrestlers, dancing tigers, the lot. After an hour of kinetic pre-match entertainment, the kick off was almost an anti-climax. But those days are long gone...
Back to the Coyotes. After the National Anthems (We stood with all the others, and made up our own words.) and the light show before the match, came face off. We weren't really aware so much goal mouth action occurred in ice hockey, with the goaltender pulling off miraculous saves - this was amazing, as the shots seemed to come in at light speed.
There was also a great deal of stoppages, which thankfully were filled with the cheesy crowd-goers I was familiar with from Ice Hockey computer games. The best one was when the home crowd imitated a Coyote - "AAaaaoowwwwww!!!!!!" Madness - we looked out for the guy we met before the match, who was wearing a hat made out of a real Coyote.
Half time was passed with much hilarity - Sumo Ice Hockey was just about the funniest thing I've ever seen, and the little kids having a game were good naturedly heckled by the crowd. "You SUCK!!!"
3 - 3 at full time, and the game went into nail biting sudden death. Breaks at both ends, but luckily the Coyotes got the winner. A successful debut supporting the Coyotes, and I was buzzing with excitement all the way back to our hotel. If I saw Monet in person the next day, I'd probably body check him.
Now I keep track of the Coyotes progress via the Internet, and look forward to my next game.
