| emle1183's Full Review: Beaver Stadium |
Penn State football season has become a living tradition that the whole country is aware of. State College prides themselves as the home of Penn State University, the home of one of the greatest football programs in the country. Yes, many are brainwashed, but whether a Penn State fan or not, attending a game at Beaver Stadium will be a life long memory.
Deciding to go to a game should not be a last minute decision unless you know someone in State College where you will be staying with or if you are coming in a trailer home. Hotels are virtually impossible to book for football weekends, so plan ahead!
A typical game day begins bright and early with the acres and acres of trailers, cars, tents, and vans set up for the traditional tailgate festivities. Although State College is known for there poor parking accommodations, on game days the acres of open fields surrounding the stadium are opened up for parking and tailgating. There is a sea of fans pumped up for the game who all file into Happy Valley the night before the big day. I am told that traffic is typically a pain trying to get into State College, so make sure you leave early! The smell of barbeques and the sound of alumni singing the alma mater and the fight song is all you need to prepare yourself for the game. Many people who do not care to tailgate will park at their hotels or in the downtown parking garages and either walk up to the stadium or hop on the loop (public transportation).
This year (2006) the tickets sold out in July, but they can be found if you look hard enough. After the Ticketmaster stock sells out, they can be pretty expensive depending on which game you want to see. Student tickets are usually about $23/ticket for a student, and then they charge an extra $20 validation charge if you are not a student, but have a student ticket. Public tickets can range anywhere from $40-$100+ per ticket.
Students pack in at least an hour before kickoff to get the best seats possible in the student section. Bodies are painted, wigs are attached, and pom-poms are ready. Everyone knows the cheers, the songs, and the traditions involved in the day. As a spectator you can feel your seat vibrating from the loudness and excitement of the fans. Win or lose, a day at Beaver stadium is always well worth the money. The sense of pride will forever be engraved in your heart after experiencing the notorious, roaring chant, "WE ARE...PENN STATE!!"
