I attended Penn State University for four years, and I must say (with the exception of meeting my future wife), that some of my most memorable and exciting moments happened at Beaver Stadium watching Penn State football games. There is just something so special about this stadium.
Maybe it is the location, nestled between two mountain ranges with big ole Mount Nittany within view of much of the stadium. Or, maybe it is the adrenaline rush of seeing Joe Paterno and his Nittany Lions storm out of the tunnel before the beginning of the game. I don't know what it is, but I always seem to get this excited and yet very peaceful feeling when I am at Beaver Stadium. It almost feels like you just belong there, along with 96,000 other faithful fans.
If you have never been to the stadium, the views from the upper decks of the surrounding terrain are well worth the trip, especially on a cool, sunny, autumn afternoon in central PA when the leaves are showing a display worth the price of admission.
Speaking of prices, tickets range from $17 for students (you can always find students trying to sell tickets before the game) to $34 for non-student sections. There really are not many bad seats in the house, but sitting up higher will give you better views of the entire field.
Parking is plentiful and it is a good idea to try and find parking in downtown State College and walk up to the stadium (15-20 min. walk from downtown). This will give you the added bonus of seeing a good part of the campus and is worth the effort.
Once inside the stadium, there is ample room to walk on the outer concourses and the consessions are very reasonably priced. I recently got nachos for $2! I don't think I have EVER paid less than $3.50- $4.00 for nachos anywhere.
Besides the great action on the field, the Nittany Lion mascot is always up to something and the band plays at halftime and after the game, so you can enjoy the soothing sound of victory (hopefully) music while waiting for more than 90,000 other people to clear out of the stadium (which actually does not take as long as it sounds).
There is usually a nice crowd wave that will get started in the student section. The "WE ARE.......PENN STATE" chant is so intimidating that it gives me goosebumps! The lion roar from the scoreboard is also very cool in my opinion, but I think they can juice it up a bit.
Overall, this is a really great experience, and if you are concerned about ticket availability, there are enough tickets that you can usually find somebody willing to sell at your price in the parking lot. Unless of course, the team is undefeated and on its way to a national title. If you try to go early in the season though, you can probably avoid having to spend too much.
