Beaver Stadium is like the Mecca of University Park, PA. Joe Paterno is God and football weekends are homages.
Every football weekend in the fall brings 70,000 plus alumni, football fans, and others to State College, PA. Every hotel ups its price 300%, rooms have 2 night minimums, and you need to book them at least a year in advance. Even the hotels in the surrounding cities are booked. People even rent out rooms in their homes. Needless to say, the town becomes crowded and they are all there to tailgate, watch football and worship Joe Paterno. (yes, he's still alive).
Now that you have been given some background information, let's talk about the place of worship. Beaver Stadium is magnificant! There are 96,000 seats and they are currently building on to that. Currently, it is the second largest college stadium, second only to the University of Michigan (BOO!). However, after the renovations, that might not be true. It is just HUGE! Except for the student sections, all of the seats are these nice comfy blue padded chairs. Us students got stuck on just plain old bleachers, but since we stood for most of the game, it really didn't matter.
Taking in a game from the student section is totally different than sitting in the "regular" section. The students are loud, spirited, and exciting! At least one third of them are drunk and it is always a fun time! I can't really say what it is like from the other sections b/c I've never sat in them during a game, but everyone is always sitting down. However, there is never a lack of cheering. There are always a plethora of "waves" throughout the game and the band is always playing. Speaking of the band, the halftime shows are always spectacular.
If you get hungry during a game, don't worry, there is never a lack of vendors pushing Pepsi's and Hot Dogs at you, so you don't even have to get out of your seat to get some refreshments. However, if you do want a larger variety of snacks to choose from, there are plenty of refreshment stands for you to choose from. Also, as you are walking to or from the game, you will inevitably pass through a mirage of tailgaters who are usually happy to offer you some food.
Overall, Beaver Stadium is a great place to enjoy some Nittany Lion football. It is even a better experience when PSU wins. If you get the opportunity, check out a game, but just don't expect to find somewhere to stay at the last minute, or you will be out of luck. Oh yeah...and good luck finding a parking spot. =)
