I had season tickets for Penn State football as a student, from '83-'87.
I moved to the mid-west, and attended a Penn State game as often as possible out there at Illinois, Indiana, Northwestern, Purdue and a bowl game here and there.
Now that I reside in Virginia, Penn State is only 4 hours away. I obtained tickets for the Toledo game (enough said about how that game turned out).
The stadium is better than I remembered. Beneath the stands was about what I remembered (dark and dusty), the money has been spent on the field and the new scoreboard.
The playing field is meticulously groomed and cultivated. It's just a beautiful looking field. The new scoreboards feature a state-of-the-art Jumbotron, if possible, get a seat with a good view of it so you can watch the replays.
Bring a seat cushion if you're no longer college age. The seats are cold metal, with no backing (typical college stadium seats).
Get to the game early and watch the band. The drum major is one highlight of the pre-game festivities, another is when the players thunder onto the field to the chant "We are - Penn State".
Alcohol is not sold at the game, so sneak a flask in if you want some bourbon with your Coke - a must have on those cold November days. Wear your warm clothing, nothing is more chilling than sitting at the outer reaches of the stadium with the wind whipping off of Nittany Mountain. Like most sporting events, eat before the game. You won't find any bargains or culinary delights inside the stadium.
If possible, hook up with someone who is having a tailgate party, and enjoy the pre-game festivities. Penn State fans are very friendly, a stranger might even invite you over to share in the bounty. Fans from opposing schools often comment on how well they're treated by Penn State fans.
Ticket prices are comparable to Division I college games. Virtually every game will be sold out, so don't expect to buy one at the box office on game day. Tickets can be had at market price on game day, but don't expect to get tickets to the PSU-Ohio State game on Saturday cheap, or you'll be disappointed.
If you're driving to the game, leave the night before or very, very early the morning of the game. Roads leading to State College are few, most have one or two lanes, and they get jammed quickly. I always park far away from the stadium, then walk or take a bus to the stadium, which is no problem if you arrive early.
Go Nittany Lions.
