The Swamp, where only Gators get out alive!! This is probably one of the most feared stadium in college football.
The Swamp is what we call Ben Hill Griffin Stadium at Florida Field, home of the Florida Gators. If your team plays here you had better be ready for a LOUD game as Florida sells out every game, even against weak teams.
What makes our stadium such an imposing place to play? Lets see:
1) The Florida Gators are almost always one of the nations top teams, you had better come prepared to play.
2) Our fans are some of the loudest on earth! When you have 85,000+ screaming for your head, it can be a little intimidating.
3) The field is actually built in an old sinkhole. You enter the stadium at ground level and the field is actually below you. All that sound goes down into a hole and doesn't come out. You can't even hear yourself think, much less call plays.
Ben Hill Griffin Stadium is a beautiful facility. It looks very good. It is located on the University of Florida Campus on a main street in town. There are many restaurants, bars and shops within walking distance. The only negative is the parking. Since it is on a college campus, the stadium isn't surrounded by a massive parking lot. Parking is available around campus, so you may have to hike a bit to get to the stadium.
There is something new for the 2000 season as well. No more passouts. In the past you could watch the first half, get a passout, run across the street for a couple drinks then get back into the stadium. For safety and security, that has been eliminated. If you leave you cannot get back in.
If you come to the game, prepare to get there early to get a parking spot. Do not bring your umbrellas as they are not allowed. Also, do not being noisemakers. Unlike Mississippi State, we actually enforce the SEC rule against noisemakers, and we are twice as loud as they are with their stupid cowbells.
If you try to sneak alcohol in there is a good chance you will be caught. Security at the stadium is usually very tight for your safety as well as that of everyone else.
Speaking of safety, if you come to the game planning on storming the field and tearing down a goalpost, you can forget about that. The University does a first class job against that. This year has seen several people injured when fans stormed the field. This does NOT happen at UF. If you are stupid enough to try and run onto the field you'll be lucky if you just get caught and arrested, they may turn the dogs onto you.
All in all the University runs a first class operation in the Swamp. Sure, you'll pay high prices for food and drink, but that's no different than anywhere else. What you will find is rabid Gator fans, lots of them so be sure to wear Orange and Blue.
