This is basketball's Mecca, it is that simple. The greatest pro-basketball field ever built. Not only do you get basketball, but you get the whole experience. It is wonderful, allow me to take you through my experience, from my perspective.
You drive up, and find a parking place that is very close by. You look at the beautiful structure, you are in awe, you can't believe how great this place looks. You see the stain glass windows and the beautiful brick structure. Then you realize that you are still driving, and must slam on your brakes to avoid smacking into the car in front of you. With that conflict avoided, you drive along to the parking lot and park your car. You get out, and begin to walk that short walk to the stadium, not even a block. You can't stop looking at the building. You are in awe, and you bump into the lady in front of you. (this is really my experience) Finally you make it into the stadium, well sort of, you are outside looking down in through glass at a practice half-court. There are parties going on down there and plenty of pre-game festivities. Then, you enter....
You see all that is the Conseco Fieldhouse. However, you can't even see the floor yet. You see an Indy 500 historical museum, an Indiana basketball historical museum, several shopping places where you can buy shirts, and other merchandise. Then you see some top quality restaurants and just tons of people standing around having a good time. You look around at the sheer beauty of this structure. You see all sorts of things that amaze you. Then it hits you, "oh yeah, I came here to see a basketball game". So you decide to go ahead and walk up those few stairs, give the man your ticket, and immediately receive a free guide to this new baseball heaven.
Just to let you know, there are five levels to this new Mecca. You start on the second one, and are almost afraid to go into the court and see it. So, you decide to walk around and take in some of the sites that this new stadium gives to you. You walk around and see many shops and stands. You see a place where you can play the new Indy 500 video game, or the newest NBA game. Then you walk into this room with a giant blue mural all across the wall. You begin to notice what is on it. It is a collective history of basketball in Indiana. It starts with when Milan High School won the state championship. (the movie hooisers). Then it goes through all five of IU's national championships. It includes when the Pacers won ABA titles. It also includes Bob Knight, Oscar Robinson, Larry Bird, and John Wooden, in his high school days. Sorry Purdue fans, you haven't done anything worth noting.
You could look at this wall for the entire game, but instead you decide to go ahead and make the accent to your seats. I was sitting in the nose bleed, thin-air seats, hey, the tickets were free. I appriciated the seats though, because I was sitting in basketball's form of heaven, and was very close to the real life form of heaven. And even though planes have to fly higher to get over where I was sitting, the view was great. It was twice as good as my 8th row seats at the RCA dome for Colts games. Things were perfect, and the game hadn't even started.
Then the lights went out and the scoreboard lit up. A black screen with white letters behind it, and those letters said.... "In 49 other states, it just basketball"..screen flashes.."but this is Indiana!" It was perfect. Being an Indiana native, I loved this. It was what everything was thinking at the time, and we all knew it. Then, the players were introduced, and the game began. The game was wonderful. The house was packed for this last game of the season. I even got to see the IU star Alan Henderson.
The whole experience was wonderful, and I would recommend it to anyone, included those of you who aren't basketball fans. Personally, I am not a Pacers fan, I am a Bulls fan, but I went anyway. Everything about the game, pre, during and post was wonderful. I enjoyed the entire experience with no regrets. The ticket prices are rather cheap. There are also excellent looking suites if you have that type of need. This is definately a great place to take clients. Parking is a breeze. It will be even easier once they tear downt he old arena, it tears my heart, but it will become a parking garage. There were no problems with getting anywhere in the stadium or anything, I even went down to the box seats and picked up a broadcasters game notes.
In summary, the stadium is great, the experience was great, and the whole thing just amazed me. I had a wonderful time, and would love to go again. I recommend this to all of you out there who even have a chance to visit Indy. I hope that you enjoyed my review and maybe got a kick out of my experience. Check out some of my other reviews, and thanks for coming.
