| Zephyrduck's Full Review: Conseco Fieldhouse |
The Vatican. Mecca. The Temple of Salt Lake City. The West Wall. All of these places are sacred places for pilgrims of various religions to visit. Now, a new temple has been built: The Conseco Fieldhouse, the sacred shrine of the religion known as Indiana Hoops.
First, one has to understand the faith. Indiana basketball is bigger than Texas football and Minnesota hockey combined. Ask any schoolchild who Bobby Plump was, and right off they'll answer, "he sank the winning shot for Milan against Muncie Central in the '54 state championship." Hoosier Hysteria is a concept foreign to people from other states, so they might not understand the Fieldhouse.
The Fieldhouse was somehow able to solidify the etherial feelings and pride that Hoosiers have for their basketball into concrete forms of brick, steel, and glass. Quotes by basketball greats are painted over the main enterance. Trophy cases line the halls, filled with worn shoes, old uniforms, retired jerseys, photographs, and programs. It's like you get free admission to a basketball museum with your game ticket.
The physical playing area itself is well designed in itself. Giant windows make up the sides of the fieldhouse allowing honest-to-goodness natural light into the sports area. There are no columns or supports, even in the cruddy seats. Sight lines are great, the only exception being during Indianapolis Ice CHL hockey games. The ice isn't dead center, so the seats in one of the endzones do not have the ability to see the goal. However, since they don't even sell tickets for those seats for hockey, it doesn't matter anyway.
The past few years brought a renaissance in baseball stadium construction. Jacobs Field and Camden Yards brought a return to the old style of sports architecture. Conseco Fieldhouse took that concept and set the bar even higher, by not only providing a high quality arena, but a near-religious experience to go along with the visit.
