| greggolightly's Full Review: Conseco Fieldhouse |
I like many other people miss Market Square Arena - the old home of the pacers. It held great memories and housed many great events (did you know that it is the site of Elvis' last live performance? or the site of Wayne Gretzky's professional debut?) But it had to go.
Part of the excitement of a new arena is knowing that it is going to try to out do everyone else. Often more is not better, but in this case it is.
First: Style
Baseball took the lead with retro stadiums. Camdon and the rest are works of art. Well, in Indiana, a retro basketball arena was a possibility. From many parts of the country, this design would not bring back any memories, but in the midwest it brings thing through nice and thick. If you are curious, rent Hoosiers (great movie, end is filmed at Butler fieldhouse in Indy which is still in use)(side point, my high school advisor was on the team depicted in the movie).
Anyway, it looks and feels like an old fieldhouse. The entrance and lobby is stunning with open areas, and the feel of an old train station.
The inside is a living museum to Indiana basketball and can give you more things to look at and do than you have time.
About the venue as a place to see a game. It is second to none. Here is a reference point I can make to you.
Last Spring, I attended a Pacer/Portland game that went to double over time (left at about 11 pm). At 10 am next morning I was at the united cneter to see my beloved hoosier get beat yet again in the big ten tourny. Now, many people like the united center. The United center holds 21,711 people, with Conseco coming in at around 19k. You would expect the United center to feel bigger, but I honestly thought it was a football stadium inside compared to conseco. Conseco is such a better design, that I hope no bulls fans come down for a game - they will want a new arena.
