| villain88's Full Review: First Union Center |
I am a huge Philadelphia sports fan, especially the Flyers. I try to get to as many games as a can a year. For me, part of enjoying the game comes with the atmosphere of my surroundings. If I'm at a trashy stadium, like the Continental Airline Arena (NJ Devils), I can't fully experience the greatness of the game of hockey. The First Union Center (which also hosts the 76ers) in South Philly helps me enjoy the game.
When I entered the arena for the first time a few years ago, I marveled at how much bigger it seemed then its sister, the Spectrum. It also looked cleaner and more modern. My only bad experience from the lobby was when the 10 year old kid in the Rangers jersey beat me at air hockey. After finding my seat 14 rows behind the Flyers goal, I then realized that the Center was much bigger than the Spectrum. I sat and watched the teams take their practice until I realized that I had to go to the bathroom. I have seen some pretty bad stadium bathrooms so I didn't know what to expect. I was greatly pleased at the size and cleanliness of the bathroom. On my way back to my seat I stopped for food. I got a hot dog and a soda that set me back almost $10. I could have sworn I was at the movie theater! If you aren't the fast food type person, I'm sure you'll find something you will like on the concourse food court or in the arena restaurant.
After you have gotten your food you can get back to your seat. That is what I did. Then, the whole hockey experience takes over. The mixture of the noise of the crowd (which carries amazingly) and the action on the ice transformed me from the regular guy that I am to a blood thirsty, only the best will do Philadelphia sports fan. It helped that the Flyers were just finishing of a home to home series with the Pittsburgh Penquins in which Eric Lindros was injured in the first game. Of course, the first period of this game involved the Flyers going after the culprit, Darius Kasperitus. The game was awesome and I made my way to the parking lot afterwards. I got out of the complex and onto I-95 relatively quick. Driving home from the game, I realized how much fun I had.
Total cost for one ticket, one hot dog, one soda, and one program: about $55-$90
Total time spent walking from my car to the stadium: under 5 minutes
Total time spent waiting to get out of the parking lot at the end: 5 minutes
Final score: Flyers over the Penquins 5-4 in overtime!
