| Schankel1's Full Review: First Union Center |
The First Union Center is an extremely luxurious facility. I have been going there to see both Flyers and Sixers games since it opened in 1996. After coming from the old Spectrum across the street in Philadelphia, the "big house" as it is known seemed like a tremendous step up. It has all the new feature - a glass front restaraunt, microbrewery, cigar bar, numerous fast food places. The seats are all good seats and, for the most part, you never have to worry about obstructed views. The parking is great and its an easy commute for people out of Philadelphia, who can use the nearby exit for Interstate 95. For Philadelphians, the access to the center is fine and there is also a nearby subway stop for those not wanting to pay for parking.
The one issue with the Center is that it misses some of that old time feel that the Spectrum provided. Since the Flyers and Sixers have moved into the First Union Center they both have raised their ticket prices significantly. This price increase has "priced out" some true fans and often times the Center is filled with Corporate suits looking to impress a client, rather than watch the game. I do appreciate the many extras that the "Big House" offers, however, I just wish it had more personality and tie to the old time Flyers and Sixers. It can still get rocking, especially recently since both franchises have been playing more competitively.
