| Lilsmudge's Full Review: First Union Center |
The First Union Center is the newer home to the Philadelphia Flyers. Opening in 1996, it is a bigger arena than the former Home of the Flyers, the Spectrum.
I so badly wanted to go to the First Union center during the first season it was opened for hockey, but we were never able to attend. Finally, after much protest, I got to see the First Union Center in October 1999 during a preseason game Flyers vs. NJ Devils.
As I walked thru the doors, I thought I walked into an elaborate mall! Everything was so clean and there were bright neon signs all over with different food and sports apparel vendors. Everything was very clearly marked and we were able to locate our seats easily.
I should mention that we were in the 119 section behind the home goalie. They are normally season tickets that my husband coworker owns, but he sells them to his friends on the games he is unable to attend. We never investigated how the area is above the floor level.
When I walked in, I was in awe over the size of the interior. Clearly, it was much larger than the former Spectrum, where now the Philadelphia Phantoms (AHL Hockey) plays. The score during the game was very easily noted above center ice. The signs throughout the Center had scores of games going on that day and simultaneously.
During the game, vendors walk through the area selling popcorn, peanuts, cotton candy, pretzels and ice cream (which I can never understand at a hockey game!) You didn't need to leave your seat, unless you wanted to.
The one thing I did not like, is that they put so many seats in you feel squished in. Sure, its great to snuggle close to your husband that way, but I don't need to be close to the other guy beside me! I noticed that there is about 2,000 seats more in the First Union Center than the Spectrum.
The other thing I noticed is the accustics. In the Spectrum, things could really get loud and rowdy. In the First Union Center, sound seems to disperse. You really have to get loud to cheer your team on!
The organist and the sound effects person(s) were great in getting the fans attention and psyched for the game. I really liked the funny movie clips they would show at times. For example, after a fight and waiting for the penalties to be announced, they would show a Three Stooges clip of them fighting! It really got everyone's attention!
The outcome of the game? We beat the pants off them, naturally!
On the way out, we went past the store where they sell the Philly team merchandise. I did not want to go in, in fear of sticker shock, but I have to admit, I was pleasantly suprised! Nothing was way overpriced and actually seemed fair in prices!
We will be going back to see the Flyers beat the stuffing out of the Islanders in March. You better believe I will be screaming loud enough to be heard!
